Chloe Nelson Big Sky Golfer of the Week

March 17, 2006

Eastern Washington University freshman Chloe Nelson has been selected the Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Week after tying for 39th in a strong field at the UNLV Spring Invitational on March 13-15.

Nelson, a 2005 graduate of Silverado High School in Henderson, Nev., fired rounds of 78, 73 and 78 to finish with a 72-hole total of 13-over-par 229. She had five birdies in the second round as her 73 tied her personal best.

Nelson and the Eagles compete in their final competition of the regular season on April 3-5 at the BYU Cougar Spring Invitational in St. George, Utah. Eastern then competes in the Big Sky Conference Championships April 17-19 at Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz.

"This is great news for us," said Eagle head coach Marc Hughes. "Chloe had a great tournament against a strong field and I'm happy she won this award. Things like this can help a person's confidence grow and hopefully she will be to use it as a springboard at BYU's tournament."

Nelson, who has a 79.4 average in 25 rounds this season, helped Eastern to a 13th-place finish in the tournament, which was won by 10th-ranked UNLV. The field included three teams ranked in the top 26. Eastern Washington shot rounds of 313, 300 and 315. The 300 was EWU's top round of the 2005-06 season, and was led by Nelson's 73.

This is Nelson's first Golfer of the Week Award. Prior to the tournament, she was ranked 592nd in the nation.
