Eastern Washington is looking to start the year strong against Gonzaga and Washington State
The Eastern Washington women's soccer team kicks off its 2014 campaign this week with a pair of exhibition matches against local foes Gonzaga and Washington State. The Eagles will face the Bulldogs in Spokane on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 5 p.m. before hosting the Cougars on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m.
Gonzaga finished last season with a record of 8-11-1 while WSU finished with a record of 14-3-4. The Eagles were matched up against Gonzaga twice last season. They also faced Washington State back in 2012 for a preseason exhibition.
The Eagles are looking forward to the matches and will be using to opportunity to prepare for the season. Head coach Chad Bodnar said, "This will be a great opportunity for us to test and see where players will be working best".
Eastern returns six starters and 11 letter winners from last year's squad to go along with 14 newcomers. Senior forward Cassie Black, EWU's career leader in goals, leads the team's offensive attack while senior defenders Kayla Sutter, Katie Cashman and Jessica Wallace anchor Eastern's back line in front of veteran goalkeeper Nathalie Schwery.
