Eagle Soccer Earns NSCAA Academic Honor
Dec. 9, 2008
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has honored the Eastern Washington University women's soccer team with the Team Academic Award for the eighth consecutive year.
As a team, Eastern posted a 3.25 grade point average for the 2007-08 school year. This award is given to squads with a GPA of 3.00 or higher. Two other Big Sky Conference schools were recognized: Northern Arizona (3.37 GPA) and Northern Colorado (3.15).
In that impressive eight-year span, Eastern’s best academic performance came in 2002, when the team’s GPA of 3.50 placed the squad second in the NCAA Division I ranks and 10th overall.
The Eagles have also had an impressive number of Big Sky All-Academic honorees, earning 120 selections to that team since the 2000 season, the most in the league (NAU is second with 70). The 2008 selections are expected to be announced in January.
“We have built a very special program here at EWU,” head coach George Hageage said. “Coaching at a small Division I institution, it is extremely important to realize that 98 percent of our athletes will not turn pro and will need to excel in their chosen vocation.
“Our program has emphasized excellence in the classroom for both our varsity and junior varsity programs, and it is a tribute to their hard work and sacrifice that they have done so well, especially when compared to the rest of the Big Sky Conference.”
