Eagles face off against three familiar teams from around the region
The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team looks ahead to its second competition of the fall season, as it hosts the EWU/GU Classic Oct. 1- 3. Three other regional schools will visit Cheney for the three-day tournament, co-hosted by Eastern and Gonzaga. Among the schools are Idaho, Seattle and Gonzaga.
"There will definitely be solid competition at this event," said EWU associate head women's coach Dale Silha. "These are all teams we have seen before, and ones we typically have very close matches with during the year. It should be a fun, competitive weekend."
The Eagles had their 2010-11 season debut last weekend (Sept. 24-26) at the Cougar Classic in Pullman, Wash. Four different players on the squad earned singles wins against Big Sky opponents from Portland State, Montana and Montana State. Sophomore Ryann Warner had the most successful run in singles play, as she advanced to the second round after defeating Gonzaga's Sophie Lantaa with a 6-4, 6-2 decision. Warner dropped her second-round matchup, but rebounded well, as she beat Anya Dalkin of Portland State 6-1, 6-2 in the consolation round.
Eastern will look to continue its progress in the early season as it faces many of those same opponents this weekend at the EWU/GU Classic.
"In these early tournaments, we are mainly working on our ability to compete and our mental toughness," said Silha. "There are a few specific skills each player needs to work on integrating into a match, but the biggest thing to focus on right now is developing our competitive spirit."
Competition at the EWU/GU Classic will begin Friday at 3 p.m. pacific time, and will continue on Saturday and Sunday with a tentative start time of 9 a.m. on both days. Click the links below to view the tournament bracket/draws.
