Eagles Claim Five Doubles Wins at UCSB Classic
Eagle duo of Kelsey Knight and Chelsea Patton go undefeated at tournament in Santa Barbara
In its third and final outing of the 2010 fall season, the Eastern Washington University tennis team competed at the challenging UCSB Classic, held Oct. 8-10 in Santa Barbara, Calif. Although the team struggled a bit in singles play, the Eagles recorded five wins in doubles against quality opponents from Cal Poly, BYU and UCSB.
On the first day of competition, sophomores Kelsey Knight and Chelsea Patton topped Ezhova and Huish of BYU by a score of 8-5. The Eagle duo went on to win all of its remaining matches in the "C" bracket, as it defeated Cal Poly's Cornea and Gatewood (8-3) and beat McIntosh and Reed of UCSB (8-3).
Sophomore Ryann Warner and senior Judy Liening dropped their first doubles match of the "C" flight, but came back strong in the subsequent matches, as they outlasted Ezhova and Huish by a score of 8-6 and topped Chou and McPike in the final round also with an 8-6 decision.
In second round of singles play, Knight was pitted against the No. 1 seed of the "B" flight in Elle Carney of BYU. Knight dropped the match to Carney, but had a respectable showing, as she was able to win six of the 18 games played (6-4, 6-2). In Knight's third match of the tournament, she won her first set against BYU's Lisa Ezhova with a 6-3 decision, but unfortunately fell in the following two sets, 6-1, 6-0.
Although not able record a win, sophomore Ryann Warner also exhibited some strong play in her singles matches. In at least one game of each of her first three matches, it took her opponent seven games to finally pull out the win. In the first day, Warner fell to Erica Cano of UCSB 7-5, 6-0. She dropped her second round match to Denver's Natalie Dunn (6-3, 7-5) and her third to UCSB's Casey Reede (7-6, 6-3).
In the singles "C" flight, senior Judy Liening went 2-2 overall, which included back-to-back wins in the second day of competition. She defeated Sam Chou of UCSB with a 6-4, 6-1 decision and then followed that performance with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ane McPike of Cal Poly.
The UCSB Classic marked the final event of Eastern's 2010 fall season.
