Women’s Tennis Blanked by Cougars

After losing second-straight match to an in-state rival, Eagles look to turn it around in Big Sky Conference debut versus Northern Colorado, which is now scheduled for Sunday

The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the Cougars of Washington State on Friday (Feb. 3) at the Simmelink Tennis Courts in Pullman, Wash.

The Eagles also fell in their season opener last weekend against Seattle, losing by a very narrow score of 4-3.

Washington State quickly established control Friday on its home courts, as the Cougars swept the doubles matches. Freshmen Moira Hedberg and Chrissy Uriarte played in the top spot against WSU's Liudmila Vasilieva and Elizaveta Luzina, who rank 10th in the Northwest region. The Eagle duo lost the match, 8-3.

Junior Chelsea Patton and freshman Brittany Ellingsen also lost, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles, while juniors Ryann Warner and Rocio Norena fell at No. 2, 8-1.

Hedberg and Vasilieva squared off again at No. 1 singles. Vasilieva, who ranks 17th in the region in singles, topped Hedberg, 6-2, 6-0.

At No. 2, Patton was pitted against Elisabeth Founier, who also ranks in the top 20 regionally. Founier handled Patton, 6-0, 6-1.

The Eagles struggled in the bottom of their lineup as well, dropping the matches at No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 also in straight sets.

Eastern will now return to Cheney for its first home match of the year, which is also the 2012 Big Sky Conference debut. But due to inclement weather in the Denver area, the Eagles are now scheduled to play Northern Colorado on Sunday (Feb. 5) at 9 a.m. in Cheney, which is a day later than what was originally planned.

This is still a tentative time though, as the UNC mens' and women's teams are still awaiting departure from the Denver International Airport.

If Northern Colorado does make it in, the men's match will take place on Saturday (Feb. 4) at 5 p.m. at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse in Cheney. The EWU men's match versus Seattle will then be pushed back to Sunday (Feb. 5) after the completion of the women's match versus UNC.

Fans can check back on www.goeags.com tonight or tomorrow morning to find out the official status of the home matches this weekend. Updates will be posted on the men's and women's tennis schedule pages.
