Eagles See Winning Streak End

March 21, 2009

The Eastern Washington University women’s tennis team had a tough match on its hands on Saturday afternoon (March 21) and fell to the host Colorado State Rams by a 6-1 score. The contest was the first of five in five days away from home for the Eagles.

The Eagles claimed one of the three doubles matches, with Judy Liening and Rachel Berger prevailing on court two by an 8-5 score. Kasie King and Caitlin Bampton also played well in a tight 8-6 loss on the third court.

In singles, the Rams pulled away by taking the first five contests to finish play. However, Heather Handwerk prevailed in her match on court six, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, to earn the Eagles a positive note to end on and a team point. She has now won three straight times.

The loss snapped a three-match winning streak the Eagles had brought into the match.

The Eagles continue its busy road trip with a Big Sky Conference match against Northern Colorado (5-10, 3-2 BSC). Eastern brings a 4-2 mark into its penultimate league match of the season. First serve is slated for noon Pacific Time.
