Knox Sets School Record as Eagles Conclude Regular Season

April 23, 2007

The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team wrapped up its 2007 regular season by splitting matches with Lewis-Clark State and Idaho on the Whitworth College campus on Sunday (April 22). The Eagles defeated LCSC, 6-1, and fell to the Vandals, 4-2.

Both Kasey Knox and Marie Demerath earned a pair of singles wins, as Knox moved away from a six-way tie for the school record for singles wins in a season, while Demerath would tie the old mark and place herself tied with five other players for the second slot on that list. Knox has 14 wins on the season, while Demerath has accumulated 12. Records include spring records and date to 1991.

In the first contest, the Eagles defeated Lewis-Clark State (8-8), a team ranked 19th nationally among NAIA teams, by a 6-1 score. The Eagles swept all three doubles matches for just the fourth time in 2007. The No. 1 match was an 8-7 barnburner and the second court saw an 8-0 result for an Eagle doubles team for just the second time this campaign.

In singles play, the Eagles claimed 5-of-6 matches to earn the comfortable win. Knox broke the school record with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Maria Resende, while Amanda Mankovits and Sayaka Yoshimoto each earned clutch wins in supertiebreakers. Those came at the Nos. 4 and 5 positions, respectively.

The Eagles then faced the Idaho Vandals (15-8) in a match which only saw the singles matches played. Idaho took four of those to eliminate the need for doubles contests to decide the team result. Knox, however, did extend her school-record win total to 14 with a 6-2, 6-4 defeat of Patricia Ruman. Demerath also earned a victory to move to two behind Knox, defeating Carolyn Berry handily, 6-0, 6-1.

Eastern, at 8-14, now has earned the most wins attained by an Eagle women's tennis squad since the 1993 team went 10-8.

Eastern Washington now looks ahead to this weekend's Big Sky Conference Championship, which will be held at the Gold River Racquet Club in Sacramento, Calif., 13 miles east of the Sacramento State campus. The Eagles, the fourth seed, will take on No. 5 Montana (5-16) on Friday (April 27) in a quarterfinal contest. First serve will be at 2 p.m.
