EWU Doubles Team Plays Impressively in Georgia
Nov. 2, 2008
Players from the Eastern Washington University men's and women's tennis teams competed from Friday-Sunday (Oct. 31-Nov. 2) at The Landings Collegiate Invitational hosted by Franklin Creek Tennis Center in Savannah, Ga. Highlighting Eastern's play was a championship won by the doubles team of Nico Riego de Dios and Kyle Schraeder.
This tournament was a chance for our players to compete against some of the stronger schools in different parts of the country," head coach Darren Haworth said. "We competed against some of the top junior players in the country, some of whom were nationally ranked. I'm really proud of the high performance level we played at. Not too many people out here had heard of Eastern Washington, but they know us now."
The doubles tandem of Riego de Dios and Schraeder defeated Timothy Mudrick and Thomas Ptacek from Auburn Montgomery, the 2008 NAIA team national champions, by an 8-3 score in the semifinals. The two then toppled Paul Bishop and Edualdo Bonet of Armstrong Atlantic State, the defending NCAA Division II national team title holders, 8-2
The dramatic final saw Riego and de Dios and Schraeder outlast Joris De Weerdt and Matthew Sands of Georgia Southern in an intense affair 9-8 (7-3).
Riego de Dios also had an impressive run to the singles semifinals, defeating Auburn Montgomery's Nikola Miskovic in comeback fashion 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 and Arthur Takahashi of Winthrop 6-0, 6-3 en route to that round.
On the women's side, the doubles team of Marie Demerath and Amanda Mankovits made an impressive run to the quarterfinals and then, after being eliminated from the main draw, proceeded to the consolation final. Wins came over Georgia Southern's Ali Beavers and Molly Maddox 8-5 in the main draw and 8-3 in the consolation quarterfinals, as well as a defeat of Shea Huxtable and Emma Knight of Georgia Southern in the consolation semifinals 8-3.
The Invitational was played on clay court, a rarity in college tennis. Eastern prepared for the trip by practicing a couple times on the clay courts of the Spokane Racquet Club.
The Eagle players also impressed many by how they composed themselves.
"We received a lot of positive comments from the spectators at this tournament with how impressed they were with the positive attitudes of our players," Haworth said.
This tournament wraps up Eastern's fall play. The men's and women's squads will open their spring dual-match schedule in January. Complete schedules will be posted to www.goeags.com in the near future.
