EWU Names Scholar-Athletes for March

April 16, 2008

Marie Demerath and Nico Riego De Dios have been selected by the Eastern Washington University athletics department as its Scholar-Athletes for the month of March.

Demerath had an outstanding month of March on the tennis court, as she won the final six of a seven-match singles win streak in that month. Four of those victories came in dominating fashion, in straight sets and without allowing more than five games combined. She went a perfect 5-0 in home singles matches in March. The Kenmore, Wash., native also teamed with Sarah Leuenberger for four doubles victories. The two got the month off to a perfect start, crafting an 8-0 victory in a 7-0 blanking of Idaho State. She had rallied from a sub-par first couple months of the season to flourish in March. The oldest of three children, she has compiled the seventh-highest singles win total in school history, 23, especially impressive considering she is just a sophomore. Last year, she tied the school record for singles wins in a season with 14. Academically, the Communications major has posted a 3.24 grade point average.

Riego de Dios had a solid month of March on the tennis courts against top competition. The sophomore claimed three wins, including two in Big Sky Conference matches with Idaho State and Northern Colorado. Doubles play saw him team up with Art Karas for three straight victories at the beginning of the month and four total in the third month of the year. The duo also went a perfect 3-0 against Big Sky competition. They are on both the single-season and career record lists, as their 12 victories earned so far places them tied for second and fourth, respectively. Last season, Riego de Dios had a pair of impressive straight-set singles wins to help Eastern Washington to its first-ever postseason wins since joining the NCAA Division I ranks in 1984 and a berth in the league's championship match. In the classroom, the Olongapo City, Philippines, native holds a 3.37 grade point average while majoring in Exercise Science.
