Eagles Edged by NAU 4-3

Eastern Washington won the doubles team point, but third-seeded Northern Arizona rallied to win four singles matches and pulled out a 4-3 victory over sixth-seeded Eastern Washington Thursday (April 27) at the Big Sky Conference Women's Tennis Championships in Pocatello, Idaho.

The Eagles finished the year 7-13 after a 4-17 finish a year ago. Northern Arizona, which defeated EWU during the regular season by a 4-1 score on April 2, advances to the semifinals with a 9-9 record.

Eastern won at No. 1 doubles (Amanda Mankovits/Iliana Petrova) and No. 2 doubles (Kasey Knox/Marie Carroll) to advance to singles competition ahead 1-0. Mankovits and Petrova finished the year 5-2 together and Knox and Carroll were 2-0.

But the only EWU singles victories were recorded at No. 3 singles by freshman honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference selection Rachel Berger and by Petrova at No. 4 singles. Berger finished the year 11-6 in singles and Petrova was 6-4.

Knox, who earned second team All-Big Sky honors this year, lost 6-3, 6-3 to NAU's Susan McClelland at No. 1 singles. Earlier this season, Knox defeated McClelland 6-1, 6-1.
