Carolee Gutierrez won all four of her events as the Eastern Washington University track and field team hosted the 36th Annual Pelluer Invitational Thursday and Friday (April 5-6). Several EWU athletes set personal bests Friday and a four qualified for the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships.
Gutierrez, a senior from Newport, Wash., threw 164-6 in the hammer, 155-10 in the javelin, and personal bests of 45-6 1/2 in the shot put and a 146-3 in the discus. Her shot put now ranks her fourth all-time in school history. Gutierrez has qualified for the Big Sky Championships in all four events.
Freshman Erica Chaney recorded a personal best in the shot put (43-4) and had a 138-7 throw in the discus to qualify for the BSC Championships in both events.
Also qualifying for the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships were freshman Jessica Duran in the heptathlon (4,158 points), and seniors Teanna Meinhold and Candice Nell in the triple jump, with jumps of 38-9 3/4 and 38-1 1/2, respectively.
Several athletes recorded personal bests at the meet including senior Amanda Faire (shot put at 42-8 3/4), Valerie Bertsch (hammer, 160-6), Erica Kirley (hammer, 150-4) and Camille Moseley (5,000, 17:49.25).
Next weekend some athletes will travel to the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., while others will compete at the Sam Adams Invitational at Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash.
