Hegna Finishes 14th in the Pole Vault

Eastern Washington University track and field senior Sarah Hegna, had a 14th place finish in the pole vault (12-6) at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I West Regional Championships in Eugene, Ore. (May 25-26).

Hegna improved 13 spots from her 27th place finish at the 2006 NCAA West Regional Championships. Her career best vault of 12-11 1/2 in Irvine, Calif., earlier this year ranks her second in school history. She placed second at the Big Sky Conference Championships for the second straight season behind 2007 NCAA Indoor Champion Ellie Rudy of Montana State.

Bonnie Millard the 2006 BSC Champion in the discus, finished fourth in her flight and 15th overall in her first appearance at regionals with a throw of 154-10. The sophomore has a personal best of 155-0 to rank fourth in EWU school history.

Also competing in the women's discus was senior Carolee Gutierrez. Her throw of 151-5 placed her fifth in her flight and 16th overall. Gutierrez placed 14th at the 2006 West Regional Championships with a throw of 144-10.

She earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Championships (June 6-9) in Sacramento, Calif., by placing second out of 25 competitors in the javelin, with a throw of 175-7 on Friday night.

In team scoring, the EWU women placed 20th with eight points.
