Track and field athlete Shene Davis and tennis player Art Karas have been selected by the Eastern Washington University athletics department as its Scholar-Athletes for the month of January.
At the EWU Candy Cane Invitational, Davis qualified for the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships in the 60 meters and the triple jump. She had a time of 7.18 in the 55 meters, ranking seventh in school history and qualifying her in the 60, and recorded a triple jump mark of 38-3 1/4.
Then, at the Cougar Indoor Invitational in Pullman, Wash., the sophomore had a career-best jump of 38-3 1/2 to rank third on Eastern's all-time best list.
Davis maintains a 3.58 GPA while majoring in math education. She was also named to the Big Sky All-Academic team last season.

Karas has the most career wins in Eastern Washington history with 46. The senior also holds the record for the most victories in a season with 18, which was accomplished last season, as he helped the Eagles to the Big Sky Championship. Women's Scholar-Athletes
He is already off to a great start in 2009, having recorded a 5-2 singles mark so far. Included among the wins is a victory over No. 66 Utah's No. 3 player.
Karas attained All-Big Sky honorable mention accolades last season, as well as Big Sky All-Academic accolades the last two seasons. He is majoring in accounting and carries a 3.29 GPA.
