Eagles Travel to Pocatello for Big Sky Championships

Feb. 26, 2008

After five regular-season meets, 31 members of the Eastern Washington University track and field teams will travel to Pocatello, Idaho, for the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships Feb 29-March 1. The event is hosted by Idaho State University at Holt Arena, with events beginning each day at 9:30 a.m. Pacific time.

Last year, Eastern's men finished in fifth place with 75.5 points and the women were eighth with 22 points. Sacramento State won the men's title while Weber State claimed the women's title.

A total of 16 men and 15 women will be competing for EWU. Distance runner Curtis Suver is the only Eagle returning who has earned All-Big Sky Conference honors (top three finish) at the previous indoor championships.

Suver from Covington, Wash., enters the meet ranked second in the 5,000 meters and third in the 3,000. Earlier this season he broke school records in the 3,000 (8:07.39) and in the 5,000 (14:03.64). Last year, he placed third in the 5,000 with a time of 14:56.70 and fifth in the 3,000 with a time of 8:34.5.

Junior Mike Uhlenkott from Spokane, Wash., will be competing in the pole vault with a season best of 15-7. Last year, the 2004 graduate of North Central High School finished sixth with a jump of 15-6 1/2. His career-best pole vault that year was 15-9 to rank him second on Eastern's all-time best list.

On the women's side, Erica Chaney from Spokane, Wash., enters with the fourth-best shot put in the BSC with a mark of 46-6 1/4. That mark ranks the sophomore out of Gonzaga Prep School third in school history.

Freshman Chelsi Friese from Lebam, Wash., will be competing for the first time at conference in the 60-meter hurdles and in the pole vault. She is ranked third in the hurdles (9.16) and fifth in the pole vault (11-1 3/4) on EWU's all-time best list.

Mattie Bridgmon enters with the sixth-fastest 3,000 meter with a mark of 9:48.87 to rank second in school history. A qualifier for last fall's NCAA Cross Country Championships, Bridgmon will also compete in the 5,000.
