Hegna ranked eighteenth in the Nation in the Pole Vault

Feb. 28, 2007

Seniors David Paul and Sarah Hegna from the Eastern Washington University track and field team await to hear Monday (March 5) if their marks in the weight throw and pole vault, respectively, are good enough to qualify them for the NCAA Indoor Championships March 9-10 in Fayetteville, Ark.

Paul is currently ranked seventh in Division I with a winning throw of 68-8 1/2 at the Big Sky Conference Championships last weekend. His mark broke his own school record and was the third longest in Big Sky history. He earned field athlete of the meet and all-conference honors.

The automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA is 70-6 1/2. The top eight Americans will earn All-American honors in each event at the NCAA Championships next week.

"To set the school record was a big plus for Eastern and for Dave," said Eastern's women's head coach Marcia Mecklenburg. "He is ranked seventh right now in Division I and they usually take the top 16 or 17, so his shot of getting in is really good.

He finished second at last year's championships in the weight throw and had a season best of 65-5 1/2. As a sophomore he had a best of 57-0 1/4 and as a freshmen his best was 45-8.

"You never really know in the weight throw how far you can keep improving," added Mecklenburg. "Each year he has made huge leaps, so I didn't feel that this was out of his reach compared to how much he improved from his sophomore year to his junior year and now from his junior year to this year."

Former Eastern thrower Mike Quinn, a 2005 graduate of Eastern Washington has been an assistant coach for the past two seasons. Quinn and Paul were teammates together early in Paul's career. Quinn ranks sixth all-time at Eastern in the weight throw with a throw of 59-7 1/2 in 2005 when he placed fifth in the league.

"I attribute a lot of Paul's success to Mike Quinn," said Mecklenburg. "He has helped coach him and the whole weight crew and has done a tremendous job. It has shown in how all of these athletes have done in our program. He has been finishing his degree and came back to help out since he used to throw the hammer here. He has really stepped up and done a great job with those kids."

Hegna sits 17th right now in Division I with a season best vault of 13-4 1/2 -- a school record and the fourth best mark all-time in the Big Sky. Hegna will compete at the University of Washington Last Chance Qualifier Saturday (March 3) in hopes of improving her chances at being selected for nationals.

She finished second at the BSC Championships with a vault of 12-9 to earn all-conference honors for the fourth consecutive year.

Eastern's only indoor All-American was Kurt Kramer in 2001. He finished ninth in the triple jump at 52-1 3/4. Kramer holds the school record at 53-5 1/2.
