Eagles Compete at the Al Manuel Invitational

After taking two weeks off because of spring break, the Eastern Washington University track and field teams will compete in Missoula, Mont., at the Al Manuel Invitational April 4-5, before heading home for the 37th Annual Pelluer Invitational Track and Field Meet on April 10-11.

Eastern will be joined in Missoula by Montana, Montana State and Gonzaga along with athletes from Carroll and MSU-Billings. The meet will include dual-meet scoring for UM, MSU, GU and EWU.

The meet begins with the women's hammer throw at 3 p.m. Friday, with the men to follow at 4:45 p.m. Field events start at 10:45 a.m. Saturday morning with the women's shot put, women's javelin and men's long jump. The running events begin at 11:15 a.m. with the women's steeplechase.

Last year at the Al Manuel, the Eagle men lost to Montana 98-96 and beat Montana State 103-89. For the women EWU lost to Montana 105-86 and Montana State 89-88.

The following week, the Eagles will be competing at home in the 37th Annual Pelluer Invitational Track and Field Meet (April 10-11). The multi-events portion of the meet begins at 1 p.m. with the men's decathlon and 1:30 p.m. for the women's heptathlon. The multi-events will conclude Friday (April 11) with the decathlon starting at 8:30 a.m. and the heptathlon at 10 a.m. The regular portion of the Pelluer begins April 11 with the field events beginning at noon and running events starting at 4 p.m.

Eastern opened up the outdoor season at the Dusty Lane Invitational (May 14-15), where 11 athletes qualified for the Big Sky Conference Championships (May 14-17). Among them, freshman Amanda Peterson met the automatic qualifying standard in the javelin for the NCAA West Regionals (May 30-31). In her first collegiate meet, Peterson had a throw of 152-6 to rank her seventh in school history. The regional qualifying mark is 142-6 1/2.

Top performers
Chad Butorac (Jr., Northport, Wash. - Northport HS '05)
Butorac won the 400 meters with a time of 49.13 and finished second in the 200 with a time of 22.16 at the Dusty Lane Invitational (March 14-15). A junior from Northport, Wash., Butorac began his pursuit of the school record of 47.05 set by Hogan Wrixon in 1988. Butorac's current career best is 47.19 to rank second in school history.

Brody Faire (Jr., Ellensburg, Wash. - Ellensburg HS '05)
Faire qualified for the Big Sky Conference Championships in the shot put with a throw of 50-9 1/2 to finish second at the Dusty Lane Invitational (March 14-15). He also finished eighth in both the discus (135-7) and hammer (143-11).

Alex McNairy (Jr., Spokane, Wash. - Ferris HS '05 & Cal. Lutheran Univ.)
McNairy finished first in the 400 meters with a time of 58.32 and second in the 200 with a run of 26.36 at the Dusty Lane Invitational (March 14-15).

Amanda Peterson (Fr., Gig Harbor, Wash. - Peninsula HS '07)
Peterson qualified for the BSC Championships and met the NCAA West Regional qualifing mark in the javelin with a throw of 152-6. She now ranks seventh in school history and won the event at the Dusty Lane Invitational (March 14-15).

Other Notes:
In the Big Sky Conference preseason coaches poll announced on March 19, Eastern's men were selected to finish seventh while the women were picked eighth. Weber State was picked first for both the men and women. Last year at the conference championships, the EWU men finished sixth with 72.8 points and the women were seventh with 71 points. This year's BSC Championships take place in Sacramento, Calif., May 14-17.
