Junior Mattie Bridgmon of the Eastern Washington University track and field team was named the Big Sky Conference Track Athlete of the Week for her performance at the Oregon Relays in Eugene, Ore., April 25-26. This week, Bridgmon will be competing at the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif., in the 1,500 meters.
Bridgmon, from Laramie, Wyo., broke her own school record with a time of 16:33.60 to finish fifth in the 5,000 meters as the Oregon Relays. A week ago, at the Mt. Sac Relays April 17, she broke Kari McKay's record of 16:57.71 set in 1992. Her time qualified her for the Big Sky Conference Championships and the NCAA West Regional.
She has also qualified for the BSC Championship in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:40.88 to finish first in that event at the 37th Annual Pelluer Invitational (April 11). She is coming off of a championship in the 5,000 meters at the BSC Indoor Championships and finished 64th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
"She's one who would try to push the limit a little bit in terms of mileage," added Zeller.
This week, Bridgmon will be competing in the 1,500 meters at the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif., Hannah Lohrmann holds the school-record with a time of 4:31.93 set in 1999.
"She is a leader, both as a person and as a runner," said Zeller. "She's one of the hardest workers on the team."
The Eagles will split this week with athletes going to the Bronco Twilight in Boise, Idaho, on May 2, the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif., on May 3 and the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Stanford, Calif., on May 4.
