Carolee Gutierrez Sets New School Record in Discus

Eastern Washington University senior Carolee Gutierrez of the women's track and field team, set a new school record and qualified for the NCAA West Regional Championships in the discus, with a throw of 160-9 at the Vandal Jamboree (May 4-5) in Moscow, Idaho.
Her previous career best was 150-2 and the old school record was 157-6 set by Kelli Holloway in 2001. Gutierrez also placed second in the hammer (168-7) and the shot put (42-11 3/4) and third in the javelin (128-9) at the Vandal Jamboree. Earlier this season, she qualified for Regionals in the javelin and for the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships in the shot put and hammer.
Freshman Erica Chaney qualified for the BSC Championships in the javelin with a throw of 136-4 1/2 ranking her eleventh in school history. Chaney also had personal bests in the shot put (44-9 1/2) and discus (146-10 1/2). Her throw in the shot put now ranks her fifth all-time.
Junior Mallory LaPlante qualified for Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships in the discus (143-8).
Also qualifying for the Big Sky Championships was freshman Kristen Felderman. She placed second in the 400 with a time of 58.15.
Eastern will head to the Big Sky Outdoor Conference Championships in Pocatello, Idaho (May 9-12). A total of 24 Big Sky qualifying marks have been met by Eastern student-athletes.
