2008: For the second straight year, Mortensen
earned mention to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team. A
stalwart in the back row for the Eagles throughout the 2008 season,
she had her best performance in Eastern’s 25-23, 21-25,
25-23, 25-19 win over Notre Dame on Sept. 5, contributing a
career-high 22 digs to EWU’s victory. The next day, she
finished off her outstanding weekend of performances at the Idaho
Volleyball Classic with two more double-digit dig tallies, first
with 12 in a 25-21, 25-15, 27-25 loss to the host Vandals and then
with 18 in an impressive 25-27, 25-20, 25-16, 26-24 defeat of
Washington State. In a 23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-21 win over Big Sky
champion Portland State on Oct. 10, she not only had eight digs but
also finished off the tight second set with a clutch service ace.
She helped Eastern to an exciting 25-14, 25-20, 15-25, 24-26, 15-11
road win over Gonzaga on Oct. 13 with three service aces, setting a
season high which she would tie later in the campaign. Mortensen
attained double-digit digs once again on Oct. 23 in a home win over
Idaho State, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21, with 10. For the second
time in 2008, Mortensen had three service aces in a 25-21, 25-23,
25-22 road loss to Montana on Oct. 30. Her 12 digs on Nov. 1 helped
Eastern Washington to a 19-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-9 road win over
Montana State on Nov. 1. Mortensen had her season-high assist total
in a 25-19, 21-25, 25-18, 25-17 defeat of Northern Arizona on Nov.
6, tallying four. Her final double-digit dig performance came on
Nov. 29 in the Big Sky championship match versus Portland State, as
she had 10 in a 25-22, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21 loss to the Vikings.
2007: Mortensen was named to the Big Sky
Conference’s All-Academic team after playing well on the
court and performing at a high level in the classroom in 2007.
Against Utah State on Aug. 25, she had 10 digs, her first-ever
double-digit dig total as an Eagle. She would have six 10+ dig sums
in 2007. In Eastern Washington’s first Big Sky match of the
season versus Weber State on Sept. 13, she contributed nine digs to
Eastern’s efforts. Two matches later, Mortensen had her
second-highest dig output of 2007, as she accumulated 12 at Montana
State. Then, just two days later on the back end of that road trip,
she tallied 11 against the Montana Grizzlies. Mortensen set her
career high for assists with seven in a 24-30, 30-22, 30-26, 25-30,
15-12 win at Montana on Sept. 22. Against Sacramento State on Oct.
13, she had a then-personal high with 16 digs, an especially
remarkable total given that the match only went three sets. Her
fifth double-digit dig sum came against Idaho State on Oct. 18,
when she contributed 11. She had five service aces against Weber
State two days later, tied for the most by an Eagle in 2007 and
still a career-high total for Mortensen. She had 14 digs versus
Northern Colorado on Nov. 3, an exciting comeback 34-36, 30-23,
25-30, 30-26, 15-11 road win, her sixth and final 10+ dig total of
the campaign. Mortensen had three kills in 2007, one apiece against
Montana (Sept. 22), Northern Arizona (Sept. 29) and Northern
Colorado (Nov. 3).
2006 (Snow College): One of four players on the
team to see playing time in all 39 matches, Mortensen led the squad
in digs per match by an impressive margin of 1.26 per set
(Mortensen had 2.81 dps). That average placed her fifth in the
Scenic West Athletic Conference. Mortensen was also an excellent
server for Snow College, as evidenced by her 36 service aces (0.34
per set), the third-highest total on the team. She tallied 14
assists and five kills in 2006, as well.
High School: After her Pleasant Grove High School
squad played in the Utah 4A state championship match her sophomore
and junior years at the school, Mortensen helped lead the Vikings
to a state title her senior season. The Vikings were fourth at
state in Mortensen’s freshman year. Her parents are Helen and
E. Lynn Mortensen. She is majoring in social work.
