The Eastern Washington University volleyball team (1-5) fell to host San Francisco (5-1) in the final match of the PowerAde/Asics Classic on Saturday evening (Sept. 1). The Eagles went 1-2 in the tournament and dropped tonight's contest, 33-31, 30-20, 30-21.
Hayley Hills was named to the all-tournament team. She had 4.00 kills per game and hit .291 (48-14-117) for the weekend. She also averaged 2.50 digs and 0.58 blocks per game in Eastern's three matches at the tournament.
The Eagles enacted an incredible rally in the first game, staving off four straight game points after trailing, 29-25. After its timely 5-0 run was finished, Eastern had a game point of its own at 30-29. Unfortunately for EWU, it was now San Francisco's turn to respond to being pushed to the limit, as the Dons rallied from 30-29 and 31-30 deficits to secure the final three points of the game for a 33-31 win.
In the second game, six consecutive USF points gave the host team an 18-11 lead and the Dons did not look back. The third game saw San Francisco tally the first six points of the stanza and pull away from there.
The Eagles next play at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Volleyball Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. Eastern first takes on 16th-ranked Hawai'i at 10 p.m. PT on Thursday (Sept. 6). No. 19 Santa Clara and Wichita State, respectively, await the Eagles the next two days.
