After Close First Game, No. 19 Santa Clara Sweeps EWU
Sept. 7, 2007
The Eastern Washington University volleyball team battled tough with a top-20 team for one game for the second straight night, but was outlasted by No. 19 Santa Clara, 30-27, 30-16, 30-24, on Friday night (Sept. 7). The match was Eastern's middle one at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Volleyball Classic.
The Eagles (1-7) had an amazing comeback in the first game, improbably rallying from 25-18 down with seven straight tallies for a 25-all tie. A Hayley Hills kill tied the score. After another Hills putaway tied the score at 26 before the Broncos pulled away by scoring four of the final five points to prevail, 30-27.
Game two was all Santa Clara's after the Broncos pulled away from a 6-6 tie with a 19-7 run for a commanding 25-13 advantage on its way to a 30-16 win. The third game saw the Eagles stay close the majority of the contest, trailing by just two late at 20-18, before SCU ticked off five straight tallies for a 25-18 lead. The Broncos won that game, 30-24, to complete its sweep of the Eagles.
Hills led Eastern in kills with 11, more than twice as much as the second kill leader for Eastern. Amanda Yausie had 14 assists. Two Eagles contributed double-digit kill totals, including Honolulu native Kristen Ponce (2004 Kamehameha High School graduate) and Mandy Daniels. The two had 10 each.
"Kristen did a great job serving and digging for us," interim head coach Irene Matlock said. "She brought in a great attitude with her, so we're hoping that type of attitude will be contagious for the rest of the team.
"Mandy played well on defense, as well. She's reading holes in the blocks a lot better. She had a great serving spree in the first game which brought us back into that game (it took the Eagles from 25-18 down to a 25-25 tie)."
The Eagles will wrap up play at the tournament with a contest against Wichita State. The Shockers (5-2) play Hawai'i in a late Friday evening contest before meeting Eastern Washington in an 8 p.m. PT match on Saturday (Sept. 8). Live stats will be available at www.hawaiiathletics.com.
