Big Sky Tournament Match-Ups Set

Nov. 17, 2007

The Big Sky Conference Volleyball Championship match-ups have been set. Third-seeded Eastern Washington (14-14, 12-4 BSC) will take on No. 6 Northern Arizona (12-14, 7-9 BSC) at 11:30 a.m. on Friday (Nov. 23) in Sacramento, Calif. A win would move the Eagles into a semifinal against the second seed, Sacramento State (26-7, 13-3 BSC), at 7:30 that evening. The championship match is set for a 7 p.m. first serve on Saturday (Nov. 24).

Portland State (20-7, 13-3 BSC) earned the top seed in the tournament by virtue of its 25-30, 30-27, 30-27, 30-28 victory over Sacramento State on Saturday (Nov. 17). The Vikings and Hornets finished the regular season tied for the regular-season title, but PSU earned the No. 1 seed (and the right to host the 2008 Championship) because it had earned the tiebreaker between the squads by winning 5-of-9 games in head-to-head meetings.

That result also ensures that Sacramento State and Eastern Washington will not meet in the championship match, as the two rivals have done seven straight seasons. If the teams were to match up this weekend, it would occur in the semifinal round.

Eastern's quarterfinal opponent, NAU, clinched the final berth in the tournament after sweeping Northern Colorado tonight, 30-26, 31-29, 30-21. The Lumberjacks outlasted Montana (10-16, 6-10 BSC) by a game for the sixth spot in the tournament.

An entertaining Big Sky season has seen the fifth-place team, Northern Colorado (10-19, 8-8 BSC), beat a team that tied for the regular-season title, Sacramento State. Also, fourth-placed Weber State (15-12, 11-5 BSC) has earned wins over both of the co-regular season champions, PSU and the Hornets. The victory over Sacramento State came in California's capital city, snapping a 59-match regular-season winning streak the Hornets had held in home Big Sky contests, dating to 1999.
