ESPN tells the story of Eastern Washington University freshman defensive end Brandon Thomas, who overcame tremendous adversity on his way to fulfilling his dream of playing Division I football.
Following his sophomore year at Central Valley High School in Spokane Valley, Thomas discovered osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, in his right ankle. Treatment included amputation and chemotherapy. He was granted a medical exemption for an additional year of high school and returned to football just 15 months later, working his way back to League MVP honors.
Like most true freshmen, Thomas redshirted for the Eagles during the 2023 season, but he turned heads at fall camp with several big plays in the team's final scrimmage before the regular season.
Thank you to ESPN producer Alexandra Nolen, reporter Chris Connelly and ESPN's outstanding film crew for highlighting Thomas' journey.
