Rebecca Tarbert and Elizabeth Prouty Earn Titles on Final Day of Big Sky Indoor Championships

Junior Parker Bowden also finishes second in the 60-meter hurdles by breaking his own school record from yesterday

FULL RESULTS

Eastern Washington University senior Rebecca Tarbert picked up where she left off the day prior by winning the Big Sky Conference title in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.42 at the league's indoor championships Saturday (Feb. 24) at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz. One day prior, Tarbert had the top mark in the preliminaries of that event with a new school record time of 7.37.

Junior Elizabeth Prouty was the other Eagle to earn a title during the day, by clearing a personal-best of 13-3 in the pole vault to take first and place her fourth on EWU's all-time list. Senior Macey Weitz took fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-9. Junior Samantha Raines was right behind her in fifth with a mark of 12-5 1/4.

"Going into this meet I said the pole vault was our bread and butter and that crew pulled it off again," women's head coach Marcia Mecklenburg said. "Elizabeth's personal record along with Macey Weitz's and Samantha Raines' finishes gave us a tremendous boost in the point totals. Elizabeth's win was the third win a row at the Big Sky Championships in the pole vault for our EWU women, with Anandae Clark winning indoors last year and Erin Clark winning outdoors last season. With that kind of success I have to give a huge shout out to our vault coach Eric Allison and his trusty assistant, Mike Mikos."

At the conclusion of the three-day long meet on Saturday (Feb. 24), the EWU women finished fourth with 52 points while the men ranked seventh with 39 points. The Eagle women equaled their second-best finish in school history, topped only by a third-place finish in 2016.
Northern Arizona swept the competition by taking first overall on both the men and women's sides.

"We felt there were points left on the board, but the team's effort over the past few days was outstanding," men's head coach Stan Kerr said. "We are excited to wrap up the indoor season with numerous personal records."

"I feel the teams that placed between fourth and tenth are pretty evenly matched," Mecklenburg said. "I am so proud of our crew for making it out of that indoor championship in that fourth place spot."

Overall, Eastern Washington left Flagstaff, Ariz. with six athletes honored as All-Big Sky Conference: Junior Larry Still (1st, pole vault), senior Rebecca Tarbert (1st, 60m), junior Elizabeth Prouty (1st, pole vault), freshman Alexis Rolan (2nd, 60m | 2nd, 200m), junior Parker Bowden (2nd, 60m hurdles) and junior Aaron Pullin (3rd, pole vault).

Women's Top Performances
Freshman Alexis Rolan earned All-Conference in two separate events. She finished second in the 60 meters with a time of 7.45 and also finished second in the 200 with a personal-best time of 24.18. The mark puts her on second on EWU's all-time list with Joyce Rainwater from 1995 owning the record with 23.82.

Sophomore Madison Doepker had a top-10 finish in the weight throw by taking seventh with a mark of 55-10 1/2. Senior Paris Flenoy took 10th in the same event with a throw of 54-8 3/4.

"Madison Doepker's finish added more points to our total and was the first time she has scored at a Big Sky meet," Mecklenburg said.

Senior Macey Weitz took fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-9. Junior Samantha Raines was right behind her in fifth with a mark of 12-5 1/4.

Men's Top Performers
Junior Parker Bowden broke his own school record that he claimed yesterday in the 60-meter hurdles by taking second in the event and finishing in 8.00.

"Parker Bowden got us off to a strong start today by breaking the school record again in the hurdles," Kerr said. "Joe Gauthier followed up Parker's performance with a high finish in the 60."

The Eagles had more top-10 finishes with freshman Joe Gauthier taking fifth in the 60 meters with a time of 6.83. Senior Scott Miller took seventh in the shot put with a throw of 53-10 1/2. Freshman Isaac Barville took 10th in the mile run, finishing in 4:23.09.

Freshman Reggie Hayden finished ninth in the triple jump with a mark of 47-7 1/4. Big Sky Leader sophomore Keshun McGee took 12th with a jump of 46-9.

More comments from head coach Stan Kerr . . .
On championships: "This was the first conference championship for many members of the team. They were able to experience the depth of the Big Sky Conference, which is going to serve us well as we now transition to preparation for the outdoor season. The championships are special. The memories made of competing and winning against top competition are certain to be treasured."

More comments from head coach Marcia Mecklenburg . . .
On individuals: "I don't know if coach Kerr's spring crew could have done any better. What an amazing meet for them."

On Rebecca Tarbert and Alexis Rolan: "With the vault crew as our bread and butter, the meat and potatoes of the team at this meet were Rebecca Tarbert and Alexis Rolan. They have done it all year long and they did it again at Big Sky's. The difference in those two places in the 60 was two one hundreds of a second. It turned out to be as exciting a race as I had hoped. Alexis also came back and had a personal-best in the 200. She was a workhorse for us and as a freshman. She has a great future ahead."
