Bo Levi Mitchell is latest former Eagle to join
professional football ranks
The “Gunslinger” gets to play for the
Stampeders.
Former Eastern Washington University quarterback Bo Levi
Mitchell has signed a free agent contract with Calgary of
the Canadian Football League, Stampeders head coach and general
manager John Hufnagel announced on Monday (April 30).
Nicknamed the “Gunslinger,” Mitchell said he will
report to the team's training camp at the end of May, with
Calgary's exhibition opener against Edmonton on June 15.
Former Eastern linebacker J.C. Sherritt and quarterback Matt
Nichols play for the Eskimos, and Greg Peach is now with the
Hamilton Tiger-Cats after getting signed as a free agent on Feb.
18, 2012.
“It's a great feeling, and not just a great feeling
personally for me,” said Mitchell, who started 25 games as an
Eagle. “I'm thankful for the opportunity to represent
Eastern Washington University like this. Getting this chance to
play professional football is a reflection of the hard work by
(head coach) Beau Baldwin and (quarterbacks coach) Zak Hill.
Without them and my teammates, I'm not here.
“Two years ago I didn't see myself in this
position,” Mitchell added of his transfer two years ago from
Southern Methodist University to EWU. “To play on such great
teams and with great teammates, it's nice to see the school
recognized beyond college football.”
Several other former Eagles are currently active in the CFL and
many others have had highly-successful careers north of the border.
Quarterback Rick Worman – a transfer from Fresno State
University before playing from 1984-85 for EWU – started his
career in Calgary and passed for 8,577 yards and 55 touchdowns in
103 games during his five-year CFL career.
“That will be one of the funnest parts – to
play against former teammates,” said Mitchell. “In so
many interviews I've said I was glad J.C. was on my team, but
this time he won't be. It will be exciting to get to play
against J.C. and Greg.”
Like he did at Eastern when he led to Eagles to the NCAA
Division I Football Championship in 2010 in his first season at
EWU, Mitchell hopes his collegiate experiences will translate well
to the wide-open offense played in the CFL.
“It's a pass-friendly league with a fast-paced
offense like I played for under coach Baldwin and (SMU head coach
June) Jones. Hopefully that will may it an easier transition,
although the defenses I will face will be faster because I'm
going up against professional athletes.
“But I think I can go in, get used to it and then just do
what I've been doing,” he added. “I'll try
to go in do everything I can to compete for the spot. I just want
to do what I can to make our team better.”
As an EWU senior in 2011, Mitchell won the Walter Payton Award
presented by The Sports Network to the top player in FCS. In 2011,
the senior led the FCS in four categories, including passing yards
(4,009) and touchdown passes (33) on his way to breaking four
school records. He broke EWU's record for single season
passing yards with 4,009, which ranks 17th in FCS history and fifth
in Big Sky Conference history.
Mitchell was named to eight All-America teams as a senior,
earning first team honors on six of them. He was the top
quarterback on teams selected by The Sports Network, American
Football Coaches Association, Walter Camp, Associated Press, Phil
Steele Publications and Beyond Sports College Network. Also,
Mitchell earned third team honors from collegesportsmadness.com and
honorable mention on The College Sporting News Fabulous Fifty
All-America team, and won the Elite Quarterback Award from College
Football Performance Awards.
The 19 wins in 2010 and 2011 combined are the most back-to-back
by an Eastern team in school history, so no quarterback has been as
successful as Mitchell. Mitchell also had the rare opportunity to
play the 2011 season with his older brother Cory
Mitchell, a freshman wide receiver who finished with 19
catches for 310 yards and a pair of scores.
With safety Matt Johnson drafted by the Dallas
Cowboys. A total of 64 Eagles have been drafted or signed free
agent contracts with NFL or CFL teams since 1989. Seven Eagles have
been selected to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine in the
past nine years (2003-2011), with seven selected to play in 10
different college all-star games.
Mitchell played in the National Football League Players
Association Collegiate Bowl on Jan. 21, 2012 (he completed 8-of-15
passes for 110 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions).
#9 Bo Levi Mitchell
Quarterback, 6-2, 210, Katy, Texas
Head Coach Beau Baldwin: “Bo had an
amazing career here for what he was able to accomplish
statistically and from a win-loss standpoint. And throughout it
all, he's been a great leader and helped lead our program to
a national championship. To have him even mentioned in the same
breath as some of the great Eastern quarterbacks we've had
here – including Payton Award winner Erik Meyer – would
have been an incredible accomplishment in itself. In terms of
winning the national title and leading us to 19 victories in two
seasons, we've never had a quarterback more successful than
Bo.”
“His development in just two years wasn't easy
and it took some time. He got better as the 2010 season went along,
and we all expected that. A first-year starter is never going to be
perfect at the start of the season, but you want to see serious
progress. He worked at it and we saw the growth -- he worked hard
to develop his skills and was tireless at studying video in order
to better understand and operate our offense. It culminated with
his production this season and the way our team ended the year with
six wins in our last seven games. I couldn't be more proud of
what he accomplished here.”
“In a lot of ways, he played much better this year
than a year ago. It was just that a lot of other parts of our team
didn't necessarily go as well. In terms of his growth of a
quarterback, he made huge strides and really worked at
it.”
Career: The most successful quarterback in
Eastern history, he directed the Eagles to a 19-7 mark in his two
seasons at EWU (12-4 in the Big Sky). He had more wins in a
two-year span than any other Eastern quarterback in school history
– even more than Meyer, who won 16 combined in the 2004 and
2005 seasons and had the previous school record for passing with
4,004 yards. The 19 wins in 2010 and 2011 combined are the most
back-to-back in school history, so no quarterback has been as
successful as Mitchell. Eastern has had six quarterbacks earn
All-America honors – Meyer, Nichols, Blankenship (2002),
Harry Leons (1997), Rick Worman (1985) and Bill Diedrick Jr.
(1967), and the most back-to-back wins were recorded by Leons (18
in 1996-97) and Diedrick (18 in 1966-67). In their best seasons,
Meyer won 16 (2004-05), Worman won 16 (1984-85) and Nichols won 15
(2007-08). Blankenship played only one season after transferring
from Tulsa. Mitchell's career average of 288.7 passing yards
per game per outing is a school record and ranks ahead of the 268.4
average of Matt Nichols (2006-09). Mitchell's career average ranks
19th all-time in the FCS and sixth in the Big Sky. Despite playing
just two seasons at Eastern, Mitchell ranks third in school history
for career passing yards (7,505) and third in touchdown passes
(70), and he is also third in completions (618), fourth in attempts
(1008) and third in passing efficiency rating (141.2). He had 10
300-yard performances in his 26-game EWU career, including four of
the 19 400-yard performances in school history. After transferring
from Southern Methodist University in January 2010, Mitchell won
the starting job in the spring and started his first game for the
Eagles on Sept 2, 2010, versus Nevada. His 26th and final start
came on Nov. 19, 2011. He played in the 2012 AstroTurf NFL Players
Association (NFLPA) Collegiate Bowl, completing 8-of-15 passes for
110 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.
2011: Mitchell capped a sensational two-year
career for the Eagles by being selected as the winner of the Walter
Payton Award given to the top player in the NCAA Football
Championship Subdivision. Fathead.com sponsors the prestigious
award, which was presented for the 25th time by The Sports Network
at the annual FCS Awards Banquet on Friday evening (Jan. 6) in
Frisco, Texas. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Mitchell became the fourth
Eastern player in the last seven seasons to win either the Payton
Award or the Buck Buchanan Award (top defensive player in FCS).
Eastern's Erik Meyer won the Payton Award in 2005, and Greg
Peach (2008) and J.C. Sherritt (2010) have previously won the Buck
Buchanan Award presented to the top defensive player in FCS. A
total of seven players from the Big Sky Conference have now won the
Payton Award. Mitchell was also the Big Sky Conference Offensive
Player of the Year and a first team All-BSC selection as a senior.
That led to consensus first team All-America accolades, including
first team honors from the American Football Coaches Association,
The Sports Network, Associated Press, Walter Camp Football
Foundation, Phil Steele Publications and Beyond Sports College
Network. He also received third team accolades from
Collegesportsmadness.com and honorable mention on the College
Sporting News “Fabulous Fifty,” and won the Elite
Quarterback Award from College Football Performance Awards. Eastern
won six of its last seven games to finish 6-5 in the 2010-11
season, and Mitchell had a record-breaking season by passing for
4,009 yards and 33 touchdowns. He guided Eastern Washington to a
5-3 conference record despite the team suffering a myriad of key
injuries early in the season and having a rushing offense that
ranked 112th out of 120 teams in FCS. Mitchell finished the 2011
regular season as the leading passer in the NCAA Football
Championship Subdivision. The senior from Katy, Texas, averaged
364.5 yards per game to rank ahead of the 346.1 average of Jackson
State's Casey Therriault. As a team, the Eagles were first
with an average of 368.5 per game, just ahead of Morehead
State's 358.2 average. Mitchell was also first nationally in
total offense (364.0) and 19th in passing efficiency (146.7), and
his 33 touchdowns and 4,009 total yards also led the FCS. Mitchell
ended his career by being selected as Big Sky Conference
co-Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in EWU's
season-ending 45-14 victory at Idaho State on Nov. 19, 2011. It was
the fourth time in the last six Eastern games that Mitchell earned
at least a share of the league's weekly honor. He accounted for 433
yards of total offense in the victory, completing 37-of-51 passes
for 397 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. With
outstanding protection all day from his offensive line, he also
scrambled his way to another 36 yards rushing. Mitchell won Big Sky
Offensive Player of the Week honors for the third time in the 2011
season after recording the ninth-most yards in school history with
a 436-yard performance against Cal Poly on Nov. 12, 2011. Mitchell
completed 34-of-50 passes with an interception and five touchdown
passes to five different receivers. He provided the winning points
with a 25-yard TD pass to Greg Herd on the first play of the third
overtime and subsequent scramble for the two-point conversion.
Mitchell's older brother, Cory Mitchell, caught a 22-yard TD
in the game and finished with career highs of seven catches and 132
receiving yards. He was selected as the team's Offensive Player of
the Week. Mitchell passed for 440 yards against Portland State on
Oct. 29 to rank as the seventh-most in school history. Earning his
second-straight Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week
honor, Mitchell had an even 400 passing yards in EWU's 48-27
win over Northern Colorado on Oct. 15, finishing with three
touchdowns through the air and one on the ground. He completed
28-of-39 passes with no interceptions. His passing efficiency
rating of 183.3 was the second-best performance in his career,
ranking only behind the 192.7 rating he had last season versus
Northern Arizona (20-of-26, 288 yards, three touchdowns, two
interceptions). Mitchell followed his performance against UNC
with a 357-yard effort against Sacramento State, throwing four
touchdown passes to Nicholas Edwards en route to a 42-35
come-from-behind overtime victory. In a 36-28 win at Northern
Arizona on Oct. 8, Mitchell passed for 356 yards – accounting
for all of EWU's touchdowns and all but 34 of Eastern's
total of 390 yards of offense. One of his TD passes was a 17-yard
completion to his older brother Cory Mitchell, who
leaped high in the air to pull down the pass that Bo Levi admitted
later was intended for another receiver. As a result, Mitchell was
selected as Big Sky Conference co-Offensive Player of the Week --
the first such honor for the senior from Katy, Texas.
Mitchell's career-high for passing yards was 473 in
EWU's season-opener in the 2011 season against Washington on
Sept. 3 when he completed 39-of-69 passes to rank second in school
history for yards, completions and attempts. Prior to the start of
the season, he joined teammate Brandon Kaufman on the Walter Payton
Award “Watch List.” Lindy's College Football
Preview selected him as its preseason FCS Offensive Player of
the Year. Lindy's also selected Mitchell to its
preseason All-America second team, and as its preseason Player of
the Year in the Big Sky Conference. He was given first-team
preseason All-America honors from Consensus Draft Services. The
Sports Network selected him as one of the top 10 returning
quarterbacks in FCS in 2011, and he earned a similar honor from
College Football Performance Awards as one of the top 38
quarterbacks. Earned second-team preseason All-Big Sky Conference
honors by Phil Steele's FCS College Football
Preview. In four spring scrimmages, he completed 22-of-44
passes for 270 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. At the
end of the 2010-11 school year, EWU's student newspaper,
The Easterner, selected Mitchell as Eastern's
Student of the Year. Besides leading the Eagles to the national
title, the newspaper cited his volunteer work tutoring students at
Cheney High School. He spent about five hours a week working with
the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, which
tutors small student groups to foster high-level questioning and
ultimately prepare students for a college education.
2010: Earned All-Big Sky Conference
honorable-mention accolades after starting 14 of 15 games at
quarterback for the Eagles. Was one of four team captains on the
squad and the only underclassman among those players. Mitchell had
a triumphant return to his home state, passing for 302 yards and
three touchdowns to earn Most Outstanding Player accolades in
leading Eastern to a come-from-behind 20-19 victory over Delaware
in the NCAA Division I Championship Game on Jan. 7, 2011, in
Frisco, Texas. Mitchell is from Katy, Texas, and transferred from
Southern Methodist University following the 2009 season. He
completed 29-of-43 passes and directed EWU on touchdown drives in
its last three possessions of the game. His three touchdowns
against Delaware gave him 37 for the season and helped him break
the single-season school record of 34 set by Matt Nichols in 2007.
Mitchell also broke school records for attempts (505) and
completions (300). For the season, Mitchell completed 59.4 percent
of his passes for 3,496 yards (fifth in school history), a
school-record 37 touchdowns, 15 interceptions and a passing
efficiency rating of 135.8. In NCAA Championship Subdivision
statistics, he finished ranked 20th in passing offense (233.1 yards
per game), 26th in total offense (236.2) and 26th in efficiency
(135.8). Eastern was 3-0 in the 2010 season when it was forced to
play without two-time All-America running back Taiwan Jones, and
Mitchell was impressive in all three of those games. He completed a
combined 68 percent of his passes (79-of-117) in those outings for
a passing efficiency rating of 162.0, directing Eastern on 11
touchdown drives of at least 63 yards. He completed 29-of-43 passes
for 302 yards and one interception in the victory over Delaware,
and directed EWU on scoring drives of 80 (5 plays), 89 (14 plays)
and 63 yards (8 plays). One game earlier, he completed 27-of-38
passes for 292 yards, no interceptions and four touchdowns in a
41-31 win over Villanova (12/17/10). He led Eastern on touchdown
drives of 63 yards (5 plays), 43 yards (8 plays), 80 (2 plays) and
63 yards (12 plays). Earlier in the season without Jones, Eastern
scored 21-straight second-half points after falling behind 17-14 to
surge past Weber State (10/2/10) 35-24 in a crucial Big Sky
Conference football game. Mitchell passed for a career-high 337
yards (47th-best in school history) and four touchdowns, and the
defense had three interceptions that led to scores. He directed
Eastern on touchdown drives of 66 yards (9 plays), 65 yards (13
plays), 80 yards (6 plays), 68 yards (9 plays) and 67 yards (4
plays), as he earned honorable-mention accolades nationally by the
College Football Performance Awards. Mitchell was 23-of-36 as he
helped the team to leads after all four quarters. Mitchell had a
school-record 37 touchdown passes in the 2010 season and Brandon
Kaufman caught 15 of those himself, but none were bigger than their
11-yard connection with 2:37 to play in the NCAA Division I
Championship game in Frisco, Texas. The connection capped a 63-yard
drive as EWU used three long drives in the final 16:48 to rally
from a 19-0 deficit for a 20-19 victory. It was the sixth victory
of the season for EWU when it trailed or was tied in the fourth
quarter. Earlier and trailing 19-0, Eastern finally scored when
Mitchell found Kaufman for a 22-yard touchdown pass. Before that
five-play, 80-yard drive that took just 1:30 off the clock, the
Blue Hens had a 337-98 advantage in offense. Mitchell also had a
9-yard TD pass to Nicholas Edwards during the rally. One game
earlier, Mitchell hit Brandon Kaufman with a short pass down the
sideline, and Kaufman exploded past the defense for a 76-yard
catch-and-run for a touchdown against Villanova in the FCS Playoffs
at Roos Field. The third-quarter score gave Eastern a 10-point lead
in the 41-31 victory, catapulting EWU into the FCS title game. In
the quarterfinals of the FCS Playoffs against North Dakota State
(12/11/10), Mitchell had passed for just 38 yards and faced a
daunting task with 2:29 left in the game and the Eagles stuck at
their own 10-yard line. But despite struggling with five turnovers
in the second half during a snowstorm and falling behind 31-24, the
Eagles put together a 13-play, 90-yard drive to knot the score with
23 seconds to play. Eastern converted two fourth downs on the
drive, including a 13-yard passing gain from Mitchell to Greg Herd
on a fourth-and-10 play. A sliding, 40-yard catch by Nicholas
Edwards was the longest play during the remarkable, game-tying
drive, as EWU scored the tying touchdown on a 4-yard pass from
Mitchell to Edwards. Mitchell, who was 13-of-32 for 141 yards, two
interceptions and three touchdowns in the game, provided the
game-winning points with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Hart on
the first play of overtime in the 28-31 victory. A week prior, he
had a 21-of-34 effort against Southeast Missouri State (12/4/10),
in which he had a pair of second half touchdowns and 178 total
yards. One game earlier, Mitchell earned high praise after passing
for 256 yards and four touchdowns in EWU's 34-7 win over
Idaho State (11/20/10). Mitchell was 20-of-25 for 213 yards and
four touchdowns in the first half alone as he directed the Eagles
on scoring drives of 55, 63, 71 and 95 yards. He closed the game
26-of-38 (68.4 percent) for 256 yards and no interceptions, as he
earned honorable-mention accolades nationally by the College
Football Performance Awards. In EWU's 31-24 win over Southern
Utah (11/13/10), he was 21-of-34 for 211 yards and a pair of
touchdowns, both to Kaufman. He led Eastern on a game-winning
55-yard drive, capped by Kaufman's 24-yard TD catch. In
EWU's 35-28 win over Northern Colorado (10/16/10), Mitchell
completed 16-of-25 passes for 172 yards, a touchdown and one
interception, including an impressive 7-of-8 for 57 yards in
EWU's game-tying drive late in the game in which he utilized
five different receivers. In back-to-back games against Weber State
and Northern Arizona (10/9/10), he completed 69 percent of his
passes (43-of-62) with seven touchdowns, three interceptions, an
average of 312.5 yards per game and a passing efficiency rating of
181.61. In his first four games of the season, he completed 51.4
percent of his passes for six touchdowns, four interceptions (three
returned for touchdowns), 236.8 yards per game and a passing
efficiency rating of 113.07. Mitchell had a 20-of-26 performance
for 288 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions against
Northern Arizona. In Eastern's opener against Nevada
(9/2/10), he was a respectable 19-of-35 for 253 yards and two
touchdowns. He followed that by going 16-of-27 for 188 yards and a
pair of scores against Central Washington (9/11/10), and was
17-of-37 for 234 yards versus Montana (9/18/10) in the first game
on the red Sprinturf surface at Roos Field. In EWU's loss
versus Montana State (9/25/10), he was 24-of-49 for 272 yards as
his 49 attempts equaled the 14th-most in school history. He earned
team offensive player of the week honors for his performances in
three games -- Weber State, Idaho State and Villanova. Mitchell won
EWU's starting quarterback job with overwhelming performances
in the three spring scrimmages he played in. He completed 24-of-36
passes (67 percent) for 352 yards and three touchdowns – all
to sophomore Nicholas Edwards – with just one interception.
He helped the White to a 20-0 victory over the Red in EWU's
spring game, completing a pass for 61 yards to sophomore Greg Herd
on the game's first play before scoring on an 8-yard
scamper.
SMU: Played two seasons at SMU, starting all 19
of the games he played. In his career, he completed 385-of-676
passes (57.0 percent) for 4,590 yards (241.6 per game) with 36
touchdowns and 33 interceptions. His efficiency rating was 121.8,
he had long completions of 96, 94, 77 and 70 yards, and was sacked
38 times. He had six 300-yard passing games and six with at least
three TD passes. As a sophomore in 2009, he started SMU's
first seven games before suffering an injury and being replaced by
freshman Kyle Padron. Mitchell completed 56 percent of his passes
for 1,725 yards, 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, for a passing
efficiency rating of 117.9. However, SMU was 3-4 in those seven
games before winning five of its last six to finish 8-5 and defeat
Nevada 45-10 in the Hawaii Bowl. Mitchell's top performances
in 2009 victories included a 353-yard, three-touchdown performance
against the University of Alabama at Birmingham and 266 yards and a
pair of scores versus East Carolina, including a 96-yard
completion. He also passed for 202 yards and a touchdown in a 31-23
victory over Stephen F. Austin, a team Eastern would later lose to
in the NCAA Championship Subdivision Playoffs. Mitchell had a SMU
career-high 424 yards against Washington State on Sept. 19 as he
completed 40-of-57 passes (70.2 percent) with a pair of touchdowns,
but he was intercepted four times. His interception in overtime led
to a game-winning field goal by the Cougars in their only victory
of the season under second-year head coach Paul Wulff, who spent
the previous eight seasons as EWU's head coach. In 12 games
as a freshman, Mitchell completed 57.6 percent of his passes for
2,865 yards, 24 touchdowns, 23 interceptions and a passing
efficiency rating of 124.4. He threw for three touchdowns in his
collegiate debut at Rice, and was 24-of-37 for 370 yards with five
TDs and no interceptions in a 47-36 win over Texas State. The five
TD passes tied for second-most all-time in a game at SMU and his 24
on the year were third-most. At Central Florida, he had a 94-yard
TD pass. He finished the year with four 300-yard games and had five
games with at least three TD passes. The Texas State victory was
SMU's lone win in 12 games in 2008. HS:
Graduated from Katy High School in Texas in 2008, and went on an
official visit to EWU in January 2008. As a senior in 2007, he
passed for 2,451 yards and 37 touchdowns with only four
interceptions. He led Katy to an undefeated season and a state
championship. He was named to the Houston Chronicle's Houston
Top 110. Chose SMU over an offer from Hawaii, but was also
recruited by Eastern.
Personal: Born 3/3/90 in Katy, Texas. Nicknamed
“gunslinger,” Bo Levi's parents are Dwight
Mitchell and Barbara Mitchell Miller. One of his older brothers,
Cory, is a redshirt freshman at wide receiver for the Eagles and is
a 2006 graduate of Katy High School. Their older brother, Patrick
Honeycutt, also moved to Cheney to work and had a front-row seat
for the title chase. Bo Levi's mother also moved to Cheney.
Eventually, his younger brother, Scooter, did as well for a short
time. In his return to Frisco, Texas, for the NCAA Division I
Championship game, nearly 50 family members were in attendance to
watch Bo Levi win the Most Outstanding Player award and lead EWU to
a come-from-behind 20-19 victory. He is an interdisciplinary
liberal arts major hoping to coach collegiate football.
