EWU Stumbles In Dam Cup Match At Portland State

Portland, Ore. – The Eastern Washington University women's volleyball team could never get its offense going Saturday night, Oct. 11, falling in three sets to Dam Cup rival Portland State in a Big Sky match at the Stott Center.

Won-Loss Records
Eastern falls to 2-4 in the Big Sky and 6-13 overall with the loss while PSU evens its league record at 3-3 and improves to 5-13 overall. Set scores for the match were: 25-15, 25-14, 25-19.

Turning Point
EWU played well out of the gate, opening up a 12-10 lead midway through the first set. A PSU service error saw the Eagles take a 13-12 advantage, but the hosts turned it on from there, scoring the next nine points en route to winning the opening frame.

The Vikings would maintain their momentum throughout the next two sets, keeping Eastern's offense at bay for the remainder of the match.

Top Performers
Freshman Chloe Weber continued her strong play of late, putting away six kills to go along with four blocks. Senior Kelsey Julian matched Weber's output with six kills in her return to the court after missing the Eagles' last three matches.

Junior Ana Jakovljevic added five kills and a team-best two service aces.

Senior Talia Fermantez led EWU with five blocks.

Freshman Nicole Rigoni tallied 14 assists while junior Ryann Ensrud and freshman Megan LaFond registered six digs apiece.

Key Statistics
Eastern's offense never found its rhythm, hitting -.036 on the night compared to Portland State's .196 clip.

The Vikings finished with 12 team blocks to EWU's nine, and recorded 50 digs while the Eagles notched 38 digs.

"We simply did not pass well enough tonight, and our pin hitters struggled offensively."

Match Notes
* EWU hit a negative percentage for just the second time this season, the first coming against top-ranked Stanford back on Sept. 19.

* Tonight's result drops Eastern to 0-7 overall and 0-2 in the Big Sky in three-set matches.

* Weber had a strong weekend, finishing with a total of 12 kills and 12 blocks.

Eastern will play its next four matches in the friendly confines of Reese Court, kicking off its home stand with a Big Sky counter against Montana State on Thursday, Oct. 16. First serve is set for 6 p.m. PT.
