Unforced Errors Doom Eagles In Loss To Idaho

Cheney, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's volleyball team committed an uncharacteristic number of unforced errors Friday night, Oct. 3, falling in straight sets to visiting Idaho in a Big Sky Conference match at Reese Court.

Won-Loss Records
EWU falls to 5-12 overall and 1-3 in league play while the win sees the Vandals improve to 6-10 and 3-1 in conference matches.

Turning Point
The visitors came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, hitting .647 in the first set, limiting the Eagles to just 10 points in the opening frame. Eastern committed nine errors in the first set, allowing Idaho to grab control of the match.

EWU battled back in the second set, cutting the Vandals' lead to one, 11-10, only to see Idaho reel off seven of the next eight points to open up a commanding 18-11 lead. Eastern would get no closer than six points the rest of the way as the visitors held a 2-0 advantage heading into the break.

An Idaho attack error and a block from senior Melissa Waelter and junior Kellen Barfield spotted the Eagles an 8-6 lead early in the third set, but the Vandals responded with a momentum-changing run, opening up an 18-13 lead on an EWU miscue. Eastern would cut the visitors' lead to three, 19-16, only to see Idaho quickly regain a five-point advantage it would not relinquish.

Top Performers
Junior Allie Schumacher led the Eagles with eight kills while senior Talia Fermantez chipped in five kills on 10 attacks.

Junior Milica Nisavic and freshman Nicole Rigoni each tallied 12 assists while Rigoni added seven digs.

Freshman Megan LaFond was tops for Eastern defensively, coming up with 11 digs.

Key Statistics
Idaho swung at an efficient .438 clip for the match compared to Eastern's .117 hitting percentage.

The Vandals registered only two blocks on the night compared to EWU's four stops.

Idaho finished with four service aces while the Eagles failed to record a service ace for the first time this season.

Match Notes
* Fermantez appeared in her 100th career match for the Eagles.

* Schumacher has now recorded double-figure kills in a team-best 10 matches. She now has 33 career double-figure kills outings.
