Eagles Drop First Match Of USD Invitational To CSUN

San Diego, Calif. – The Eastern Washington University women's volleyball team dropped its first match at the USD Invitational Thursday, Sept. 18, falling to CSUN in three sets at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Won-Loss Records
Eastern falls to 4-7 with the loss while the Matadors improve to 8-2. Set scores for the match were: 25-11, 25-14, 25-17.

Turning Point
CSUN claimed the first two sets but the Eagles came out strong in the third frame, battling back from an early deficit to tie the score at 14-14 on a kill from junior Ana Jakovljevic. An attack error from the Matadors knotted the score at 16-16 but CSUN would score the next six points to open up a 22-16 advantage en route to winning the set and match.

Top Performers
Senior Kelsey Julian and junior Kellen Barfield led EWU with seven kills apiece. Barfied hit .417 for the match (7-2-12) while Julian added two blocks.

Junior Allie Schumacher registered six kills and a team-high eight digs while sophomore Sophie Miller tallied 22 assists.

Key Statistics
EWU hit .100 as a team compared to CSUN's .464 clip. The Matadors also recorded nine blocks to the Eagles' three stops.

Quoting Coach King
"I thought we played well for most of the match. Offensively, we had little production to start off the match. We had good swings but hit into their blocks."

Match Notes
* Julian has now led EWU in kills in seven matches this season. The Eagles are 4-3 in those matches.

* With the loss, Eastern falls to 0-3 in three-set matches and 0-4 when hitting below .199 as a team.

The Eagles are back on the court tomorrow at 11 am against host No. 19 San Diego.
