EWU Competes at WSU Cougar Classic

Pullman, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's tennis team kicked off its Fall schedule this weekend, competing against some familiar opponents at the Cougar Classic.

Sophomore Katrina Domingo had a standout performance playing in the gray flight this weekend in Pullman, Wash. After taking out Lewis-Clark State's Lauren Lang (7-5, 6-1) in the round of 32 and Washington State's Nastia Vasiukhina (6-4, 6-4) in the round of 16, she advanced to the quarterfinals where her reign was ended decisively by Idaho's Sophie Vickers (6-2, 6-0).

Freshmen Janaya Smith and Rachel Swindell certainly held their own in their first collegiate appearances, as well. Playing in the crimson flight, Smith defeated Seattle's Barbara Ann Carey in aggressive fashion, taking the match 6-0, 6-3. The freshmen played as a doubles pair, making a statement there as well. Playing in the gray flight consolation bracket, they were taken out only by their own teammates, doubles pair Carolina Lopez (sophomore) and Brittany Ellingsen (senior), in a hard fought 7-5 match.

The Eagles will continue their Fall slate at the WimbleDon Grass Court Invite in Baker City, Ore., next weekend October 3rd-5th.
