EWU Wraps Up East Coast Swing With Second Straight Five-Set Victory

Box Score

High Point, N.C. – The Eastern Washington University women's volleyball team won its second consecutive five-set match Friday, Sept. 5, crawling back from an 0-2 deficit to defeat host High Point, 3-2, in its final match of its East Coast road trip.

Won-Loss Records
EWU improves to 4-2 with the win while High Point falls to 2-2 on the year.

Turning Point
Eastern looked like a different team after dropping the first two sets, executing down the stretch to win the third frame, 25-20, before forcing a decisive fifth set with a 25-18 victory in the fourth frame.

The Eagles used a pair of tough serves from junior Ana Jakovljevic to take an early lead in the fifth set before seniors Kelsey Julian and Talia Fermantez combined on a momentum-changing block late, giving the Eagles a 10-7 lead and forcing High Point to call timeout. The hosts could never recover as a cross-court kill from junior Allie Schumacher provided the punctuation on another epic comeback.

Top Performers
Julian and Schumacher tallied 14 kills apiece. Julian hit .324 for the match while Schumacher swung at a .268 clip.

Jakovljevic added eight kills on 18 swings to go along with seven digs and two aces.

Freshman Nicole Rigoni notched 28 assists and seven digs while putting away three service aces. Classmate Ashlee Vaoifi added three service aces and six digs.

Key Stats
Eastern outhit High Point, .246 to .189, and committed just 18 errors on 142 swings compared to HPU's 31 miscues.

EWU registered 10 service aces while High Point had five aces.

The hosts recorded 63 digs to the Eagles' 48 and outblocked EWU, 9.0 to 6.0.

Quoting Coach King
"We made an adjustment with our left sides after the first two sets, with the goal of getting a different look on the pins. The fact that we came back from down 0-2 after a long road trip shows us that we can do what we put our mind to. We have a long way to go, but I like where we're headed."

Game Notes
* Eastern has now won its third five-set match of the season through six outings. EWU won just two five-set matches a season ago.

* Julian has led the Eagles in kills in four matches this season. Eastern is a perfect 4-0 in those matches.
