CHENEY, Wash. – In its lone exhibition of the year, the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team rolled past The Master's University with an 87-56 victory on Sunday (Nov. 5).
The Eagles had a well-balanced attack offensively, as three players recorded points into the double figures. Preseason Big Sky Conference MVP
Delaney Hodgins led all players with 21 points, while
Uriah Howard and
Violet Kapri Morrow accounted for 14 points apiece. Howard also led Eastern with seven rebounds and four steals. As a team, Eastern Washington was solid from the field, shooting 46.6% from field goal range.
Defensively, the Eagles won the turnover battle as they forced 27, including 21 steals to amass 35 points off of them. Eastern Washington was also able to shutdown the Mustangs, as they only shot 32.1% from the field and 22.2% behind the arc. The EWU defense made a statement as they prohibited TMU from hitting a field goal for the final 7:45 of the second quarter up until the 3:06 mark in the third.
The EWU freshmen class combined for 24 points, as
Brittany Klaman and
Lea Wolff totaled eight points each in their Eagle debuts.
Lily Perkins added six and
Amira Chandler tacked on two.
"I saw some good things on both ends of the floor. Obviously, we saw some stuff that we need to get better at and improve, we'll have some good film to watch," said head coach
Wendy Schuller. "You play an exhibition game to get the kinks out and to try and hopefully get people some minutes. We were able to work on flowing together and accomplish the things that we wanted."
WHAT IT MEANS: Today's game served as an exhibition for both teams. The stats will not count towards the regular season, nor do the win-loss records.
TURNING POINT: Eastern opened up the second half on a 22-0 run. The Eagles grabbed five-straight steals and got points off of each one as they were able to score 11 of those points off of turnovers.
KEY STATS: Eastern only committed 11 turnovers to the Mustang's 27 and had 21 steals compared to TMU"s two. They also outrebounded The Master's 41-39. Eastern's bench added 27 points in a well-distrubuted offensive attack.
TOP PERFORMERS: Delaney Hodgins led all scorers with 21 points while adding five rebounds and three steals.
Uriah Howard tacked on 14 points with seven rebounds and four steals in just 18 minutes of action.
Violet Kapri Morrow also scored 14 points in just 18 minutes
UP NEXT: The Eagles open the 2017-18 regular season next Friday (Nov. 10), as they travel to Fresno State for a matchup against the Bulldogs. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
