Kendra Hamm Finishes Fifth in the Pentathlon on First Day of Big Sky Indoor Championships

The senior moves to second on EWU’s all-time list with a personal-best mark of 3,454 points

The first day of the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championship wrapped up for the Eastern Washington University track and field team, as senior Kendra Hamm moved to second on EWU's all-time list with 3,454 points, finishing fifth in the pentathlon on Thursday (Feb. 22).
 
The competition in Flagstaff, Ariz., was dedicated to the multi-events with the women's pentathlon concluding and the men's heptathlon finishing four of seven events.
 
Women's Results
Senior Kendra Hamm finished with 3,454 points, which is a new personal-best and puts her second on Eastern's all-time list. Jozie Kimes from 2016 owns the record with 3,499 points.
 
Hamm's best performance of the day came in the long jump and the 800 meters, where she placed fourth in both events. In the long jump, she had a mark of 18-1 while she completed the 800 in 2:27.03. Hamm finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.08.  She went on to earn 10th in the high jump with a mark of 5-0 1/2. She also took 16th in the shot put with a throw of 29-4 1/2. The performance earned EWU four team points.

"Kendra had a great day," women's head coach Marcia Mecklenburg said. "It was the best pentathlon of her life and it came at the right time. We are on the board." 

Freshman Jessica Linde also competed for Eastern in the pentathlon, finishing 20th with 2,836 points. Her best performance of the day was in the 800 meters, taking eighth place with a time of 2:30.86. She finished 19th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.63 and also in the long jump with a mark of 15-9 3/4. She also earned 19th in the shot put with a throw of 27-4 1/2. In the high jump, Linde took 21st with a mark of 4-4 1/4.
 
Men's Results
After completing four events, freshman Quintin Porterfield sits in seventh place with 2,683 points. His best performance was in the 60-meter dash, where he took third with a time of 7.12. He continued the success in the long jump with a mark of 22-1 12, taking fourth. In the shot put, he took 15th with a throw of 33-5 1/2. Rounding off the day, he finished 11th in the high jump with a mark of 5-9 1/4.
 
Freshman Race Treat also competed, but did not finish the events.
 
"Quintin and Race opened today's competition with strong performances," men's head coach Stan Kerr said. "This is their first conference championship and we're proud of their efforts.  These two will continue to get better and better which bodes well for the program as they are freshmen and will be around for a long time. "
 
What's Next
The Eagles continue competition tomorrow with the heptathlon starting at 9:30 a.m. Pacific Time. Field events will then begin at 2 p.m. with running events starting at 3 p.m. Live results can be found here.
