Big Sky Action Begins in the Win Column for EWU Women’s Basketball

Jessica McDowell-White added 19 points in a 63-53 victory over Weber State

CHENEY, Wash. – A fresh start in Big Sky Conference play for the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team ended in the win column. The Eagles hosted Weber State on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 28) where they walked away with a 63-53 win.
 
Jessica McDowell-White poured on 19 points while Grace Kirscher added 16 in the victory. Bella Cravens pulled down 12 rebounds and scored nine points to come up just short of a double-double.
 
"We battled. The game got a little bit ugly and physical at times and we had to hang on a little bit at the end, but I'm proud of our team for stepping up and playing hard. I also thought we played smart," said head coach Wendy Schuller. "Starting off conference season with a win is really important, we're 1-0 as far as I'm concerned."
 
The Eagles only trailed for 27 seconds of the entire game. After falling behind 3-0, the Eagles fired off 16 unanswered points to take a 16-3 lead. Jessica McDowell-White contributed eight first quarter points while Grace Kirscher added seven to help Eastern shoot 52.9 percent from the field while the Wildcats shot just 18.2 percent. At the end of the first, EWU held a 22-10 lead.
 
After the Eagles rattled off six-straight points to build a 28-12 lead, Weber State responded with a 7-0 run to cut the advantage to 28-19. Kirscher then hit her second triple of the game and a three-pointer from Jenna Dick made it six-straight points for Eastern Washington. Tatiana Reese joined in on the action with the first three-pointer of her career and the Eagles closed the game on a 5-0 run to lead 39-21 at the half.
 
Eastern Washington made eight three-pointers during the first half alone and shot 43.8 percent from the floor while holding the Wildcats to 28 percent.
 
Neither team scored until the 6:05 mark of the third quarter when Alexyss Newman made a three-pointer from the top. Eastern's offense then used a 6-0 run to build a 48-24 lead and led 50-31 at the end of the third, outscoring Weber State by a narrow margin of 11-10 and shooting 50 percent from the field.
 
The Eagles held on in the fourth quarter after being outscored by the Wildcats, 22-13. Weber State went on an 8-2 run to cut their deficit to 54-43 with less than four minutes remaining and cut the score to 59-53 with 52.6 remaining. Eastern Washington only made two field goals in the fourth, but were strong at the free throw line going 9-for-12 and topped Weber State, 63-53.
 
WIN-LOSS RECORDS: Eastern Washington improves to 2-8 overall and 1-0 in Big Sky Conference play. Weber State also moves to 2-8 and 0-1.
 
The Eagles have now won two-straight over the Wildcats and are 21-16 all-time at Reese Court. EWU still trails the all-time series 44-36, but have won nine out of the last 10 meetings.
 
BIG SKY OPENERS: The Eagles have won two-straight Big Sky openers, both coming over Weber State, to improve to 23-15 all-time in conference openers. They are also now 6-1 over the Wildcats to start conference play.
 
TOP PERFORMANCES: Jessica McDowell-White led the team with 19 points which ties a career-high, also set against Weber State last season. She was 6-for-13 from the field with three three-pointers and was 4-for-6 from the free throw line. She also added four rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal.
 
Grace Kirscher added 16 points and tied her career-high with seven rebounds. She was also a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
 
Bella Cravens pulled down 12 rebounds and had three blocks for the third-straight game. She also added nine points.
 
Jenna Dick led the team with four assists while Alexyss Newman also had three blocks. Milly Knowles pulled down a career-best seven rebounds and a block.
 
KEY STATISTICS: Eastern Washington shot 37.5 percent from the field (21-56), 45 percent from three-point range (9-20) and 75 percent from the free throw line (12-16). They held Weber State to 31.7 percent from the field (19-60).
 
The Eagles were just edged in rebounds, 41-to-39. They forced 17 turnovers and scored 21 points off of them to go with 11 steals and eight blocks. Weber State outscored the Eagles 32 to 22 in the paint while the bench added 24 points.
 
UP NEXT: Eastern Washington welcomes Idaho State to town on Monday (Dec. 30) to close the home stand. Tip-off is set for 6:05 p.m. inside Reese Court.
