MISSOULA, Mont. – The Eastern Washington University women's basketball team traveled to Missoula, Mont., to take on the Montana Grizzlies tonight where they fell by a final score of 92-54.
Jenna Dick led the Eagles with a career-high 18 points while
Grace Kirscher scored 15. Together, the duo made eight of Eastern's 10 three-pointers.
"It was a tough one tonight. Montana deserves a lot of credit for shooting the ball extremely well from the perimeter," said head coach
Wendy Schuller. "I was proud of our kids for showing fight and continuing to play hard until the end."
After using a 5-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 7-5,
Jenna Dick and
Tatiana Reese rattled off back-to-back three pointers to give the Eagles a 13-8 lead to open the first quarter. Another 8-0 run put the Eagles ahead 15-8 and the advantage eventually built to 21-15. From there, Montana heated up and used an 11-0 run to close the quarter, taking a 23-20 lead at the end of the first.
Eastern Washington shot 83.3 percent from three-point range (5-6) during the first quarter, three of which came from Dick.
The Grizzlies pulled away at the start of the second quarter with a 9-0 run to take a 37-25 lead. Dick then drained her fourth three of the night to spark a 7-0 Eastern Washington run which cut the deficit to five points, 49-34. The Eagles then fell cold and were held without a field goal for the final 3:35 of the half to trail 51-36 heading into the locker room.
Despite the deficit, Eastern Washington shot 58.3 percent from the field (14-24) and 85.7 percent from three-point range (6-7) during the first two quarters. The first half alone saw three ties and four lead changes.
The Eagles were outscored 25-12 during the third quarter as Montana pulled ahead to lead 76-48 heading into the fourth.
Montana opened the fourth quarter with a 12-0 run and did not allow Eastern to score until the 2:49 mark to seal the 92-54 victory
WIN-LOSS RECORDS: Eastern Washington falls to 2-11 on the year and 1-3 in Big Sky play. Montana improves to 9-5 and 4-1. The loss snaps a six-game winning streak over the Griz, but Eastern has still won seven out of the last 10 meetings.
TOP PERFORMANCES: Jenna Dick led the team with a career-high 18 points, going 5-for-9 from three-point range, 5-for-12 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. She also led the Eagles with three assists.
Grace Kirscher shot 3-for-6 from three-point range and totaled 15 points.
Cailyn Francis followed with a career-high seven points off the bench.
Leya Depriest led the team with seven rebounds and two steals while
Kennedy Dickie had five rebounds.
KEY STATISTICS: Turnovers were the difference maker, as the Grizzlies were able to score 26 points off of 17 Eastern Washington turnovers and only committed nine themselves.
Free throws also played a key role. Eastern Washington was only 4-for-5 while the Grizzlies were 22-for-25.
Eastern Washington shot 36.4 percent (20-55) from the field and 45.5 percent from three-point range (10-22). Eastern was also out-rebounded 37 to 28.
