Cross country shows grit, determination in strong team performance

Eastern wraps up regular season with race in Lewiston on Saturday morning

LEWISTON, Idaho — The Eastern Washington cross country team wrapped up their last meet before the conference championship on Saturday morning in Lewiston, with the women finishing third and men fourth in a field of eight programs at the LC State Invitational.

"(It was a) fast course, good weather and good competition today," said cross country head coach Sam Read. "It was great seeing both squads take advantage of those combos. We saw a lot of PRs and people breaking into the all-time lists!

"We are in a great spot headed into conference. This race helped us vision our mission and see what it takes."

The Eagle women were led by Nattie Ruzauskas, who finished 10th but earned nine points as the overall 5K winner raced unattached. Ruzauskas ran a career-best 17:39.0 on Saturday. The EWU pack running continued to impress, as they crossed the finish line in 15th (Kaylin Sheley), 16th (Lilly Fetzer), 18th (Madi Carr), 19th (Jasmin Muneton), 20th (Ellie Linnenburger) and 21st (Jenni Bissell) overall, finishing with 73 points, 24 ahead of 4th-place Montana.

"Another outstanding day by the front pack," Read noted. "Our women just do such a great job of working off each other and picking each other up during the race. We had different women shining bright each week this season. We can be a very dangerous team if we can put those all together on the same day."

Eastern's men side was once again paced by standout junior Noah Hasselblad, who finished 5th overall in the 8K with a time of 24:16.0. Transfer Evan Peters was the second Eagle across the line at 24:37.0, good for 12th overall. Cam McChesney finished 27th, Austin Steed 33rd and Jamie Christner 35th.

"Guys were lead by individual performances on the front end," Read continued. "Noah and Evan showed up and ran great for us putting themselves out there from the gun. We also had the Austin-Jamie duo stepping up to run personal bests and fill in our back end scoring. Our guys team did a great job grinding."

Saturday was the final test before the 2023 Big Sky Championships in Missoula, Mont. on Friday, Oct. 27.

Eastern Washington University Athletics sponsors 14 intercollegiate sports, six for men and eight for women, both as learning opportunities for its most athletically talented students and as an enhancement to student and community life. Eastern is affiliated with Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and is a member of the Big Sky Conference, an association of 10 regional schools with comparable enrollments and academic goals.
