CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington University student-athletes graduate at a rate of 91 percent, according to the latest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) numbers released by the NCAA this week. Six EWU sports earned perfect 100 percent scores.

"These continued academic achievements from our teams exemplify the attributes of what it means to be a student-athlete at Eastern," said Director of Athletics Tim Collins. "It is a reflection of the types of student-athletes that we are recruiting to Eastern Washington University.

"This is another achievement worth celebrating that reflects the great work being done in our department of Athletics."

For comparison, the Federal Graduation Rate is 69 percent. EWU matched the NCAA's average GSR (91), which hit an all-time high this year.

The six Eastern programs to achieve 100 percent ratings were men's tennis, women's basketball, women's golf, women's soccer, women's tennis and women's volleyball.

Per the NCAA: "Since the implementation of the GSR, Division I members have adopted impactful academic reforms and initiatives, including modifications of initial-eligibility requirements and progress-toward-degree standards, as well as application of the Academic Performance Program. Those reforms have helped pave the way for exponential graduation success." Student-athlete graduation rates were 74% in 2002 when the NCAA began the GSR standards.

Figures released Wednesday reflect graduation numbers among student-athletes who entered college in 2016. The report is based on information obtained from the 2023 NCAA Graduation Rate Report. This is the most recent graduating class for which the required six years of information is available.

A graduation rate (percent) is based on a comparison of the number of students who entered a college or university and the number of those who graduated within six years. For example, if 100 students entered and 60 graduated, the graduation rate is 60 percent.
