This Week in Eastern Athletics: April 13 - 19

Men’s and Women’s golf finish regular season, women’s tennis hosts senior day, track and field has two meets, soccer and volleyball host spring matches

CHENEY, Wash. — Spring quarter is in full swing and Eastern Washington athletics is moving quickly through its spring schedules. Men's golf plays its final tournament of the regular season east of the Mississippi River in Lexington, Ky. to start the week. Women's golf also has its final tournament of the regular season to prepare for the Big Sky Championships next week. Women's Tennis plays its final regular season match on Saturday and celebrates three Eagles for Senior Day. Track and Field splits its squads between Spokane and California for the second consecutive week, starting Thursday and ending Saturday. Women's volleyball hosts its spring tournament on Saturday, while soccer hosts Central Washington on Sunday. 

Track and Field – at Whitworth Twilight (Thursday, April 16th,  All Day), at Bryan Clay Invitational (Thursday, April 16 - April 18th )

The Eagles will split squads this week as they prepare for two meets. Beginning Thursday, part of the team will travel to Azusa, California to compete in the Bryan Clay Invitational, while the rest will stay local for the Whitworth Twilight Meet at Whitworth University.

At last week's meet, Azaria Purdy made her mark in the Eastern Washington record book, moving into ninth all-time in the women's triple jump with a distance of 11.88 meters (38-11.75).


The Eagles also saw multiple first-place finishes at the Jeff Rahn Classic. In the women's triple jump, Manthita Wague claimed the top spot with a mark of 12.00 meters (39-4.50). Breauna Erickson won the women's pole vault with a clearance of 3.65 meters (11-11.75), while Alex Blecha took first in the men's pole vault, clearing 4.84 meters (15-10.50). On the track, Charlie Ledwith earned a victory in the 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing in 9:28.20.


Women's Tennis - vs. Idaho (Saturday, April 18 at 11 a.m.) - Free Admission

Eastern Washington will close out the regular season on Saturday the 18th, hosting the Vandals at 11 a.m. Admission is free. The match will also serve as Senior Day, with the team honoring Anait Arutiunian, Leandra Nizetic, and Sara Vasic.

The Eagles enter the weekend coming off a dominant win over Weber State, securing their fourth conference victory of the season. In singles play, Anait Arutiunian, Zoe Pradel, Veronika Gayevyk, and Olivia Marris each picked up wins.


Eastern also swept Weber State in doubles action. Zoe Pradel and Olivia Marris earned a 6-4 victory, Sara Vasic and Anait Arutiunian followed with a 7-5 win, and the duo of Maria Lopez and Leandra Nizetic secured a 6-3 victory to complete the sweep.


Men's Golf – at Bluegrass Collegiate Invitational (Monday-Tuesday, April 13-14, All Day)

Eastern Washington men's golf will close out the regular season at the Bluegrass Collegiate Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky, taking place Monday through Tuesday, April 13–14.

In their last outing, the Eagles placed 11th as a team with a total score of 891. Junior Hogan Park led the way, tying for sixth individually with an impressive 4-under-par 212 for the tournament.


Freshman Cal Anderson also turned in a solid performance, carding rounds of 73, 74, and 74. Fellow freshman Kevin Wang added a highlight moment for Eastern, recording a hole-in-one on the third hole during the final round.


Women's Golf – at Bobcat Desert Classic (Monday-Wednesday, April 13-15, All Day)

The Eagles continue their stay in Arizona for the Bobcat Desert Classic, running three days this week with 18 holes each day. The tournament is played at the Golf Club of Estrealla in Goodyear, Ariz., and hosted by Montana State. Eastern's lineup stays consistent with Berkley Ledesma, Esha Reddy, Brooke Mahler, Lexi Mahler and Spencer Cerenzia

This past week, EWU spent two days in Maricopa, Ariz.,
at the Cowgirl Classic, hosted by Wyoming at the Ak Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course. The team finished 19th on the team leaderboard, with Ledesma shooting 232 and Reddy shooting 236. 

Women's Soccer - vs Central Washington (Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m.)

Eastern Washington soccer continues its spring season on Sunday, April 19, hosting Central Washington at 1 p.m. at the EWU Soccer Field.

The Eagles enter the matchup with momentum after securing back-to-back wins over Whitworth and Spokane Falls Community College this past weekend.


Women's Volleyball - vs Whitworth (Saturday, April 18 at 11 a.m.), vs Central Washington (Saturday, April 18 at 12 p.m.), vs LCSC (Saturday, April 18 at 2 p.m.)

Eastern Washington volleyball returns for the second weekend of its spring schedule, hosting a four-team slate featuring LCSC, Central Washington, North Idaho College, and Whitworth.

The Eagles open the day on Court One against Whitworth at 11 a.m., followed by a matchup with Central Washington at 12 p.m. Eastern will then close out the day against LCSC at 2 p.m.
