2020-21 | Sophomore:
Played in seven games during her sophomore campaign, making three starts before suffering a season-ending injury… Averaged 17.0 minutes and 7.4 points per game… Scored in double figures twice, with a career-high 16 points against Grand Canyon on Dec. 14… During the GCU game, she went 9-of-10 from the free throw line… Ended the season going 19-of-21 (90.5%) from the charity stripe… Grabbed nine rebounds twice, once against Northern Arizona on Dec. 6 and again against Grand Canyon on Dec. 14, coming just short of a double-double in both contests… Averaged 4.6 rebounds per game with 32 total… Shot 45.7% (16-35) from the field… Totaled seven assists, two blocks and eight steals with 52 total points scored.
2019-20 | Freshman:
Played in 16 games as a true freshman, making 10 starts before her season was cut short in early February due to injury… Averaged 19.7 minutes per game… Added 5.4 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game… Led the team in scoring against Idaho State (Dec. 30) with a career-high 14 points… Had three double digit scoring games… Had two double digit rebounding games, including a career-high 11 rebounds at Portland State (Jan. 4)… Earned her first career double-double at Portland State (Jan. 4) with 13 points and 11 rebounds… Led the team in rebounding in four games, steals in five and blocks in three… Grabbed a career-best three steals on three different occasions… Totaled three blocks against Weber State (Dec. 28)… Garnered seven total blocks on the season which was the fifth-most on the team… Scored 87 points with six three-pointers, pulled down 64 rebounds, totaled 16 steals and nine assists.
Alexyss Newman comes to Cheney from Goodyear, Ariz., where she attended Millennium High School and is fresh off of a 5A State Championship as a senior. Newman led her team to a runner-up finish at the 2016-17 AIAA 6A State Championships. Individually, Newman was tabbed AIAA 6A second-team All-League and AIAA All-Area.

During the 2017-18 season Newman attended Glacier Peak High School in Snohomish, Wash., where she helped the Grizzlies to a WESCO runner-up finish and was a team captain. Newman made WESCO 4A first-team All-League and was named second-team All-State. She averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, two steals, two blocks per game and earned two letters during her first three seasons of high school. Newman played club basketball with Seattle area Nike EYBL program, Tree of Hope.
PERSONAL: Daughter of Maggie and Kamau Smothers and was born in Seattle, Wash. Her uncle, Joe Ortolf graduated from Eastern Washington and went on to be the head football coach at West Valley High School in Yakima, Wash., for over 20 years. She intends on majoring in communications at Eastern and wants to go into sports journalism because she enjoys telling the back stories of athletes. She has three siblings, Isabella, Liberty and Kamari and enjoys swimming, working out and eating with friends and family.
