Steve Clark was hired prior to the 2014-15 season as the fourth head men’s tennis coach in Eastern Washington history. The 2019-20 season begins his sixth year at the helm.

2019, Fifth Season: The Eagles wrapped up the season 5-14 overall with a 3-17 record in Big Sky play, but ended the year on a two-match winning streak over conference foes Montana and Idaho. The win over Montana was the program’s first since 2012 and the victory against Idaho snapped a three-match losing streak to the Vandals. Jeremy Field was named First-Team All-Big Sky for singles after compiling a 12-3 overall record and 7-3 in conference play. Clark has now placed a player on an All-Conference team all five years of his tenure.

2018, Fourth Season: The 2018 season saw senior Scott Paz earn Big Sky Player of the Week three times, the first player in EWU history to do so. The Eagles finished 7-14 overall with a 3-8 record in conference play and Jeremy Field was named Second-Team All-Big Sky for singles.

2017, Third Season: Clark guided the Eagles to its first winning record since 2012 during the 2017 season. Eastern finished 11-10 overall and 6-5 in Big Sky play and just missed out on qualifying for the conference tournament after finishing seventh in the regular season standings. During the season, the Eagles took down defending Big Sky champions Weber State for the first time since 2012 and Sacramento State for the first time since 2009.

Additionally, Robert Dula was named First-Team All-Big Sky for the fourth-straight year, just the second player in EWU history to do so. In addition to Dula earned a double honorable mention with teammate Victor Pereira, Scott Paz also earned an honorable mention nod. Dula also earned Big Sky Player of the Week for the third time in his career and he finished his tenure with 43 singles wins which is fourth all-time in program history and ended the season ranked No. 20 in the ITA Regional rankings.

2016, Second Season: Clark led the Eagles to an 8-18 overall record and a 4-7 mark in conference play. Robert Dula earned Player of the Week twice and was named to the All-Big Sky First-Team after ranking second in the Big Sky with an 8-1 record at the No. 1 singles spot.

2015, First Season: Eastern Washington finished 7-14 overall and 5-6 in conference play for the second time in the last three seasons. The Eagles secured Big Sky wins over Northern Colorado, Southern Utah, North Dakota, Portland State and Idaho. After finishing the year 9-10 in single play, Robert Dula was named to the First-Team All-Big Sky singles team for the second-straight year.

Prior to Eastern Washington: Clark brought over 25 years of coaching experience with collegiate tennis to Eastern Washington after stints at Chapman, Texas Tech, UC Irvine and most recently served as the director of the Spokane Racquet Club.

Clark got his first head coach position in 1987, taking over lead duties at Chapman University. He promptly led Chapman to a No. 4 national ranking before moving on to Texas Tech in 1992. He coached the Red Raiders to a national ranking and victory over a top-15 Texas program for the first time in 30 years.

After one season in Lubbock, Clark assumed head coaching responsibilities at UC Irvine, leading the Anteaters to national rankings in each of his 14 seasons, including a program-record No. 16 ranking. Under Clark's tutelage, UCI won two Big West Conference titles and earned bids to the NCAA Championship seven times. He coached players to individual rankings as high as No. 5 nationally, and many of his players went on to pursue professional careers on the ATP tour, ranking as high as No. 120 in singles and No. 3 in doubles.

Clark has also directed numerous camps internationally and domestically and has spoken at coaching conventions and clinics.

Personal: Clark was an All-American tennis player at UC Davis, making the finals of the NCAA Championship in doubles and a No. 2 national ranking. He went on to play professionally the Sacramento Capitals World Tennis Team.

Clark's desire to challenge himself and others mentally and physically led him to train for many years in the oldest Korean martial art of Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan.  He has competed and won regionally, nationally and internationally (Canberra, Australia) in sparring and forms as an E Dan Kyo Sa (“E Dan”--second degree Midnight Blue “black” belt; “Kyo Sa” World Federation approval to teach in the art).

Clark holds two bachelor's degrees from UC Davis in philosophy and economics, respectively, and has a master's degree in apologetics from Biola and a master's degree in education from Chapman. Clark recently completed his PhD in educational studies from Biola.

Clark and his wife Kelly currently live in Colbert with their children Graham, Grace and Joy.
