A native of Savannah, Ga., Horton competed collegiately at the University of the Cumberlands, where he was a standout thrower from 2019–22. He earned Second-Team All-Conference honors in the outdoor season and Third-Team All-Conference honors indoors, while ranking among the top five in school history in the hammer throw. He went on to earn a graduate degree in Coaching and Fitness Leadership from Cumberlands in 2023, after completing his undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice.
