2013-14 Track and Field: Indoor: Payne ran a personal best of 7.12 in the 55-meter dash at the Candy Cane Invite. Outdoor: At the Big Sky Conference Championships, Payne placed sixth in the javelin with a throw of 206-04. At the NCAA DI West Preliminary Round, he had a throw of 175-4 1/4 in the javelin. He had a personal best in the javelin of 206-4 at the Dusty Lane Open meet to place second.

2012-13: Indoor: Payne competed in the weight throw indoors, hitting his best mark of 40-4 at the Candy Cane Invite. Outdoor: Payne placed second in the javelin at the BSC Outdoor Championships with a toss of 205-0, earning All-Conference honors. His best mark of the season came at the Dusty Lane Open, where he launched a throw of 205-9. He went on to compete at the NCAA West Preliminary Round, where he placed 38th with a mark of 193-7.  

High School: Payne had a personal-best throw of 191-7 in the javelin at the CBBN/GSL Regional Championships, placing first. His best throw in the discus was 142-2, which came at the CBBN District Championships. Payne went on to place fourth in the javelin at the WIAA 4A State Championships, getting off a throw of 184-3. He lettered four times in track and twice in football for the Richland Bombers. He also was a four-time WIAA Scholastic Athletic award winner in track. He won Big 9 titles in the javelin his junior and senior years.
