Dr. Lynn Briggs

Dr. Lynn Briggs, Professor of English, was appointed as the Faculty Athletic Representative from July 1, 2022-June 30, 2025. Dr. Briggs is a proud first-generation college graduate, whose father acquiesced to her attendance at a distant university, in part, because he had "heard of their good basketball team." She is enthusiastic about supporting the highest academic achievement of students who have the self-discipline, ability to collaborate, and willingness to receive feedback by virtue of their qualification to compete in NCAA Division I Athletics. As the NCAA emphasizes, most of these students will "go pro" in fields other than their sports.

As FAR, Briggs will work closely with two of her former graduate students, Associate Athletic Director for Student Success Courtney Bilodeaux and Football Chief of Staff Marc Anderson. Briggs describes herself as a "spatially challenged, failed field hockey player," who has great respect for student athletes, including the many family members and friends who were college athletes. Research she conducted with Dr. Jon Hammermeister and Dr. Justin Young demonstrated that many of the characteristics requisite for success in athletics can be tapped for academic self-efficacy. Dr. Briggs served as a dean for nearly half of her 26-year EWU career, and her most important accomplishments included developing policies and practices t0 advance student learning.

As many of EWU's international students are athletes, Briggs will also draw on her extensive experience in international enrollment. Further, during her tenure as dean, she supervised the academic integrity process to ensure adherence to those high standards. Please contact her at lbriggs@ewu.edu with "FAR" in the subject line for the fastest response.
