GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Eastern Washington University women's soccer team lit up the scoreboard on the road against Big Sky Conference opponent North Dakota, setting three single-game school records in a 6-1 win on Sunday, Oct. 23.
EWU began the match in typical fashion, with junior
Chloe Williams scoring the opening goal in the fifth minute off a pass from sophomore
Allison Raniere. After UND answered with its own goal in the 11
th minute to tie game, the offensive onslaught began for the Eastern. Junior
Delaney Romero took back the Eagles' lead in the 21
st minute with her second goal in as many matches, assisted by Williams on the play. Just one minute later, sophomore
Jenny Chavez entered the scoring column with a goal off an
Aimie Inthoulay pass. Williams would end the half with her second goal in the 42
nd minute, and Eastern would have its best scoring performance of the season in just 45 minutes of action.
With a full half left to play, and a 4-1 lead, EWU already had its season-high of 22 shots, and the Eagles would start the second period just as quickly as it did the first. Just 54 seconds from the start of the second, sophomore
Devan Talley found the back of the net, giving Romero an assist. The offensive production would finally cease after the 67
th minute when freshman
Brooke Dunbar's goal would give Raniere her second assist of the game and Eastern a 6-1 victory on the road.
"We have been in a bit of a rut the last few games and it was great to see our group respond today," said head coach
Chad Bodnar. "Travel is always tough coming out here, and we just came off a tough game on Friday. But our kids played well and were very sharp in front of the goal."
The Eagles set three single-match records in today's contest and came close on two other marks. The team's six goals were a new high for the program, as well as the 15 corner kicks. EWU led the Fighting Hawks by five points, a larger mark than its previous season-high of goals scored in a game. That five-point lead is tied for the largest in school history.
Win-Loss Record
Eastern Washington improves to 11-3-3 and 5-2-2 in the Big Sky Conference, while North Dakota falls to 2-13-2 and 1-8 in the BSC.
What it Means
With just one regular season game remaining on the schedule, today's dominant win was a great rebound after a tough road trip a week ago, and should act as a confidence booster heading into the Big Sky Championships in November.
Keys to the Game
The Eagles showed superb ball movement and involved their players in every facet of scoring. An assist was recorded on all six goals, and five different players scored goals with a total of seven different players recording a point.
Top Performers
Chloe Williams put together her second five-point performance of the season with two goals and one assist on eight shots, four on goal.
Delaney Romero scored her second goal of the weekend, and finished the game with an assist as well. She had five shots, with two finding their mark.
Brooke Dunbar came off the bench and scored one goal on two shots, while also recording an assist.
Devan Talley produced one goal on seven shots, five on goal.
Turning Point
Starting in the 21
st minute, the Eagles would turn a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 lead in just one minute. Romero and Chavez would score the goals, and from here on out UND would remain scoreless and Eastern would finish with its strongest performance of the year.
