CHENEY, Wash. -- The Eastern Washington University volleyball team hit .287 on Saturday, Oct. 8, to pick up a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-21) victory over Southern Utah in Big Sky Conference action.
Eastern had a season-best four player hit .333-or-better in the victory over SUU. Sophomore Ka'iulani Ahuna put together her most efficient offensive night in an Eastern Washington uniform, as the Hawaiian native hit a career-best .406 en route to her fourth-straight double-double with a match-best 15 kills and 11 digs in the straight-set victory. Redshirt sophomore Taylor Larsen also posted a career-best hitting percentage against the Thunderbirds, as the Colfax, Washington native hit a match-best .444 (9-1-18) en route to a nine-kill night. Sophomores Jessica Gilbert (7-1-18) and Kimberly Brinkworth (5-1-12) each had an efficient offensive night, as each player hit .333 for the match.
Ahuna was also one of three players to pick up a double-double on the night, as senior Sophie Miller also pushed her current double-double streak to four matches with 20 assists and 12 digs, and junior Ashley Seiler earned her third-consecutive double-double with 12 digs and 10 kills.
Eastern collected 59 digs as a team to limit Southern Utah to a .075 hitting percentage in the match. Miller and Seiler led the team with 12 digs each, while Ahuna was the only other Eagle with double-digit digs with 11.
EWU used a 4-0 run to break a 10-all tie in the first set to give the Eagles would never relinquish en route to a 25-20 victory. Eastern hit .364 in the second set to cruise to a 25-17 victory in the frame, and had to fight through 12 ties in the third set before a 4-0 spurt broke a 17-17 tie to give Eastern Washington a 25-21 set victory, and claim the match in straight sets.
"I've proud of our team and what we are doing of late," said head coach Michael King. "We could have played a little bit of a cleaner match, but I was really pleased with how we responded to the challenge in the third set and I thought Taylor Larsen did a great job tonight with nine kills. She hit .444 for the match. Both of our right sides hit well tonight, and Ka'iulani was also strong on the left side for us. I thought we had a lot of different players have performances tonight."
Win-Loss: Eastern Washington moves back to a season-best three games over .500, at 9-6, while they are now 4-2 in Big Sky play. For Southern Utah, they drop to 2-16 and 0-6 in conference action, as the Thunderbirds drop their 12th-straight match.
What it Means: Tonight's victory puts Eastern Washington at an even 2-2 on its season-long four-match home stand. The Eagles made a statement in the final week of home matches, as they knocked out the defending Big Sky champs, Northern Arizona, prior to tonight's victory.
Top Performers: Sophomore Ka'iulani Ahuna posted her fourth-straight double-double with a match-best 15 kills and 11 digs. It also extends her double-digit kill streak to five matches.
Senior setter Sophie Miller enjoyed her 15th-straight double-digit assist match, which consist of every match played this season. The Federal Way, Washington native picked up a double-double in each of the four matches on the home stand, as she tallied 20 assists and 12 digs on the night.
Redshirt sophomore Taylor Larsen continued her impressive play of late with a nine-kill night. Larsen led the team in hitting percentage on the night, the first time she has done that in her EWU career, with a .444 (9-1-18) hitting percentage. She ends the week with 20 kills, with just three errors, on 42 total attacks.
Turning Point: Eastern faced a more inspired Southern Utah bunch in the third set, as the two teams battled through 12 ties through the set's first 34 points. From that point, EWU went on a 4-0 run to take a 21-17 lead, which would propel them to a 25-21 victory to claim the straight-set win.
Notables: Â Tonight's win means Eastern will go 2-2 on its season-opening home stand. The Eagles did not play a home match until last Thursday, Sept. 29, and ended the stretch with back-to-back wins over Northern Arizona and Southern Utah.
The Eagles move to 6-2 all-time against the Thunderbirds. Eastern Washington has now won five of the last six matches in the series.
Eastern played tonight's match in front of a season-best 495 fans.
What's Next: Eastern Washington opens a four-match road trip next Thursday, Oct. 13, as they take on Idaho State. The Eagles will take on Idaho (Oct. 15), Portland State (Oct. 20) and Sacramento State (Oct. 22). First serve against the Bengals is set for 6 p.m.
