LOS ANGELES -- The magical postseason run by the Eastern Washington University soccer team came to an end on Saturday (Nov. 12) in the NCAA Tournament, as the Eagles fell to No. 2-seed Southern Cal, 3-1, in First Round action.
The Eagles fell behind 3-0 in the first half to the Trojans, but Eastern rallied and broke through with a goal against the NCAA Division 1 leader in shutouts in the 59th minute thanks to a header from sophomore Devan Talley.
Talley scored off a set piece that was delivered from fellow sophomore Allison Raniere. The midfielder was placed perfectly on the delivery and got behind the USC defense to flick in the header into the far left side of the goal to score Eastern's first-ever NCAA Tournament goal.
"I'm just really proud of our girls and the fight they put up in the second half today," said head coach Chad Bodnar. "We could have laid down, but our girls wanted to put up a fight against a pretty good team. USC is a very athletic team and the first 30-to-40 minutes we watched a lot of players run around us. We made some adjustments at half and we fought and found a goal, which was great."
Win-Loss Record: Eastern Washington falls to 13-5-4, while No. 2-seed Southern Cal improves to 15-4-1.
What It Means: With today's lost, the 2016 season comes to an end for Eastern Washington in the NCAA Tournament. For USC, they move onto to next week's Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Turning Point: The Trojans broke through with two goals in four minutes from Morgan Andrews late in the first half. Andrews' first goal came from 22-yards out, as Taylor could not get a handle on the rope, then she converted on a penalty kick just four minutes later.
Key Stats: Southern Cal dominated the offensive stat sheet against the Eagles, as they held a 35-8 edge in shots.
Eastern Washington held USC off the scoreboard in the second half, as they held a 1-0 advantage over the day's final 45 minutes.
Top Performers: Senior Mallory Taylor had a game to remember in her final cap with Eastern Washington, as the Bridgewater, Nova Scotia native made a career-high 13 saves.
Sophomore Devan Talley became the answer of a trivia question on Saturday, as she scored the first-ever goal in the NCAA Tournament for Eastern Washington. Sophomore Allison Raniere was credited for the assist.
Notables: Today was the first-ever NCAA Tournament game for the Eastern Washington soccer program.
This season's 13 wins is a single-season record for Eastern. It breaks the previous best of 12 wins, which was set by last season's team.
Today was the final game in between the post with Eastern Washington senior goalkeeper Mallory Taylor. She ends her career as the program's all-time leader in saves with 161.
Junior Chloe Williams ends the 2016 season with 36 points and 15 goals. Both now single-season records at Eastern Washington.

I'm sad that this season is over, but we came here to compete and we did. What's Next: With today's loss, the magical 2016 season ends for Eastern Washington in the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles set a program single-season record in wins for the second-straight season as they went 13-5-4 in 2016. EWU also earned its first-ever postseason victory with a 1-0 victory over Montana in the Big Sky Quarterfinals, and that victory lifted the Eagles all the way to the Big Sky Tournament Title and the school's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
