GREELEY, Colo. -- The Eastern Washington University volleyball team ran into a hot-hitting Northern Colorado team on Saturday night (Nov. 5), as the Eagles end their two-match Big Sky road trip with a 3-0 (19-25, 14-25, 20-25) loss to the Bears.
Northern Colorado hit .337 against an Eastern defense that ranked second in the Big Sky in opponent hitting percentage coming into Saturday's match. UNC is only the third team to hit above the .300-mark against the Eagles this season, and it is the first time an opponent has hit over .300 in 14 matches against EWU. Wyoming was the last team to do hit above .300 against Eastern Washington, as they hit .373 in the championship match of the UniWyo Invite back on Sept. 10.
Junior Ashley Seiler paced the Eastern Washington offense with 10 kills, as she posted back-to-back double-digit kill matches on the road trip. Freshman Katie Mahoney also landed five kills and hit a team-best .150 in the defeat.
Northern Colorado was just as impressive on the defensive end on Saturday, as the Bear collected 41 digs to limit Eastern to a .105 hitting percentage. The Eagles tallied 29 digs on the night, as redshirt sophomore Ashlee Vaoifi's 11 digs lead the team.
"I'm happy with the fight tonight, as we had to make a few last minute adjustments," said head coach Michael King. "Even though the outcome is a loss, we did some good things tonight that we can take away from this match. We will regroup and respond next week when we return back to our home court."
Win-Loss Record: The Eagles drop to 11-12 on the year, while they also move to two games below .500 in Big Sky play at 6-8. For Northern Colorado, they improve to 11-3 in Big Sky play and 17-9 overall on the year.
What It Means: With tonight's loss, Eastern Washington falls below .500 for the first time since Sept. 3, when the Eagles fell to 2-3 after a loss to Grand Canyon. EWU would not end that day with a below-.500 record however, as they played again later that afternoon, and defeated Eastern Kentucky in five-sets to pull even at 3-3 by the end of the night.
