@EWUSoccer Erupts for Four Goals in an Exhibition Win Over British Columbia

Hoekstra nets back-to-back goals in 48 seconds to help Eastern collect the come-from-behind victory

CHENEY, Wash. -- The Eastern Washington University soccer team erupted for four goals in the second half against the University of British Columbia on Saturday to win its lone exhibition contest of the 2016 season in come-from-behind fashion, 4-1.

Eastern's offensive attack was impressive in the second 45 minutes on Saturday, as the Eagles netted all four of their goals in the second stanza. EWU trailed British Columbia, 1-0, at half, as the Thunderbirds did not allow a single shot from the home team in the first frame. The story would be different in the second half, as in the 63rd minute, junior Savannah Hoekstra found the equalizer and then scored the go-ahead goal just 48 seconds later. Fellow junior Chloe Williams netted the team's third goal with an impressive run from the midfield in the 70th minute and sophomore Jenny Chavez capped off the scoring for Eastern, with her goal off an Aimie Inthoulay corner kick in the 86th minute.

Won-Lost Records: Saturday's match was an exhibition between both teams, and the outcome does not reflect on either squad's regular season record.

What It Means: Eastern Washington used today's exhibition as a way to get several players on the field and build team chemistry for potential lineups they may use during the regular season. In total, the Eagles used 30 players in Saturday's matchup, including eight players who were making their Eastern debut.

Keys to the Game: Eastern Washington subbed in its projected starting lineup in the second half. The starters picked up where they left off last season on offense, as EWU quickly tallied two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza to take a 2-1 lead.

Top Performers: Junior Savannah Hoekstra scored two goals in a remarkable 48 seconds to give her team a 2-1 advantage. Hoekstra was pulled shortly after her second goal, as she tallied four points in less than 20 minutes of play on Saturday.

Junior Chloe Williams also had a multi-point game, as the Spokane native assisted on Hoekstra's second goal and accounted for her team's third tally of the afternoon to pick up three points on the afternoon.

Key Stats: After being shutout in both shots and corners in the first half, Eastern Washington fired 12 shots and collected an impressive nine corners during the final 45 minutes of play. The defense also tightened up in the second frame, as the Eagles allowed just two Thunderbird shots after giving up six shots in the first half.

Turning Point: Trailing 1-0 entering the 63rd minute, Eastern Washington's Savannah Hoekstra scored back-to-back goals in 48 seconds to give her team a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.

Team Highlights: The Eagles demonstrated their depth today, as they played a total of 30 players.

Milestones and Records: Had today's stat officially counted, Savannah Hoekstra's two goals would've put her put her in a tie for seventh place on the school's all-time goals list with 10. She also would have become just the eighth player in program history to record double-digit goals for her career. Entering 2016, Hoekstra is tied for ninth on the team's all-time goal list with eight.

Notable: Senior goalkeeper, and fellow Canadian, Mallory Taylor made the most of her Eastern debut against a team from her native land. The Bridgewater, Nova Scotia native made one save and kept a clean sheet in a team-best 31:57 minutes between the posts.

Bodnar Bites:  On his Team's Play – "We started the day off with a lot of young players. I think there were some nerves there at the beginning, but they moved the ball well, but we didn't press up as high as we wanted. We told our veterans to start out a little higher in the second half, play quicker and find the edges, and they did that. Our sophomores and juniors really did a nice job in the second half today."

On Hoekstra's Second Goal – "I think teams are always vulnerable over the next five to six minutes when you score a goal on them. We wanted to press high up in the field and snap right back into the game and that's what we did. We forced a turnover in the midfield and Savvy jumped all over it and scored again."

On Takeaways from the Game – "We scripted minutes for today's game and looked at some parings. I think Brooke (Dunbar) will provide us with some different looks up top with her being a lefty. We still need to improve our fitness a bit. It's hot, and the kids were struggling a bit. There are always things we can clean up and we will go back and look at film to get ready for next Friday.

What's Next: Eastern Washington opens the 2016 regular season next Friday with a 3 p.m. matchup against Grand Canyon University at the EWU Soccer Field. Fans a reminder that there is free admission to all Eastern Washington regular season home games.
