Williams' Two Goals Gives @EWUSoccer Its Fourth Win Of The Season

Williams and Hoekstra combine for three goals on the road against Cal State Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Junior Chloe Williams lit up the scoreboard with two goals on Friday night in her best performance of the 2016 season, helping the Eastern Washington University soccer team to its fourth win, a 3-1 road victory against Cal State Bakersfield.

The Eagles' offense jumped off to a blazing start scoring two goals within the first six minutes of the match, and they never looked back, remaining in control for the entire first half. In the second minute, Williams nailed her second goal of the season and her first of the night on a pass from junior Aimie Inthoulay.

It did not take long for junior Savannah Hoekstra to get in on the action, sink her fourth goal of the season thanks to a pair of passes from junior Lexi Klinkenberg and Inthoulay.

Although the Roadrunners opened the second half with a goal of their own in the 48th minute, Eastern was not going to let its two goal lead disappear. Just one minute later, Williams scored her second goal of the season and secured what would be the final tally between the two teams.

Win-Loss Record
Eastern Washington improves to 4-1-0, while Cal State Bakersfield falls to 2-4-1

What it Means
After the no contest at Gonzaga, EWU was finally able to put its first loss at UNLV behind them with a commanding victory on the road, winning by its largest margin of the season so far.

Keys to the Game
After their initial 2-0 lead in the first half, the Eagles did not ease up on the Roadrunners, forcing a relentless offensive attack against their opponents that resulted in 10 shots on goal. The EWU defense did not make it easy for CSUB either, only allowing a total of eight shots.

Top Performers
Chloe Williams notched her first multi-goal performance on the season and was a dominant force at the forward position. Williams alone took seven shots in the match, putting four on goal. Her mark of four shots on goal was the same number for Bakersfield's entire team.

Savannah Hoekstra continues to cement herself as Eastern's leading goal scorer on the year, hitting her fourth goal in tonight's match.

Since her three assist match against UC Davis, Aimie Inthoulay has been the main scoring distributor, as she collected another two assists on the season.

Turning Point
It was just six minutes into the game when EWU made a statement about how the match would end, giving themselves a 2-0 advantage. That lead stayed consistent for all but one minute of the remaining 84 that were on the clock.

Team Highlights
EWU outshot CSUB 15 to eight with 10 shots on goals to only four for the Roadrunners.

Notables
Chloe Williams moved up to 20 career goals on the all-time list, just four behind the EWU record holder Cassie Black (2011-14).

Savannah Hoekstra passed Jennie Summer (2002-05) on the all-time career goals leaderboard with her 12th career goal, giving her sole possession of sixth place.

Hoekstra kept her team lead in goal this season scoring her fourth of the season. She is one goal ahead of Williams who now has three.

Aimie Inthoulay recorded her sixth assist on the season tonight, moving her into ninth place on the all-time assists rankings at EWU.

Lexi Klinkenberg recorded her first career assist tonight, giving her one goal and one assist on the season.

Bodnar Bites
"Our kids played very well in the attacking third in the first 20 or 25 mins tonight. We had some chances to really jump on them except for some incredible saves by their goalkeeper in the first half.  I thought we responded really well after conceding to go up two goals again. Our group showed some resilience and fought through the final twenty minutes and I'm proud of them."

"Chloe was sharp tonight and I thought our backs did a good job covering each other and getting some important blocks on shots.  It's a great start to a long trip and we are happy with the result."

What's Next
The Eagles continue their stay in California, playing Saint Mary's on Sunday, September 11 starting at 2:30 p.m. PST.
