Eastern Washington University's women's tennis team finished competition at the Whitman University Invite Sunday, Sept. 18 with senior 
Carolina Lopez as the champion in a singles and doubles bracket with senior 
Katrina Domingo as her partner. Junior 
Janaya Smith also made it to the finals in a singles bracket for the Eagles.
 
"I'm very pleased with the performance of my entire squad," head coach 
Dustin Hinson said. "I'm especially happy to see the success Lopez had this weekend.  She came out hungry and put out tremendous effort to win the Yellow Flight singles championship and doubles championship with partner Domingo."
 
The teams competing in the invite with EWU was Seattle University, Lewis-Clark State College, and Whitman.
 
No. 1 seed for Blue Flight Singles, the top bracket of 14 singles players, was EWU's Smith, making it to the championship before falling to Seattle University's Michelle Lui (1-6, 3-6). In the same bracket, senior 
Erin Blessing was the consolation winner and sophomore 
Faye Worrall took fourth place.
 
Playing in the Yellow Flight Singles, the second bracket of 14 singles players, was Lopez who played Audrey Scott from Seattle in the championship, winning easily by scores of 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore 
Jennifer Lewis was the consolation finalist in the same bracket, along with freshman 
Marta Heinen taking fifth place and freshman 
Valentina Sottile taking sixth place.
 
On the doubles side of the court, Smith and Worrall were the No. 1 seed in the Blue Flight Doubles, the top of the bracket with eight doubles teams, making it the semi-finals and ended up placing fourth after having to play Blessing and Swindell, who took third for the Eagles with a score of 8-6.  
 
Domingo and Lopez were the No. 2 seed in the Yellow Flight Doubles, the other bracket of six double teams, making it to the championships to play Seattle's Caroline Maltby and Audrey Scott, winning by a score of 8-4. Heinen and Sottile took third place in the same bracket.
 
"Overall, it was great to get some matches under our belt early in the fall season," Hinson said. "We have a lot of work to do to get ready for our next event at Long Beach State in a few weeks. This was a good opener that allowed me to see where we are as a team and what we need to accomplish on the practice court."
 
The Eagles will go on to play another tournament on Oct. 7-9 in Long Beach, Calif. at the Long Beach State Invitational.
